I'm starting a new project that uses some footage from lots of tapes I used in an old project.  Instead of starting from scratch and re-logging and organizing the tapes in the new project I opened the old bins and copied the master clips I wanted to use into a new bin in my current project.  Then I batch captured the clips (all the media is off line).  The problem is that these newly digitized clips are associated with the old project.  I searched the forum and found some tip about modifying the tape name but that didn't work so I've been consolidating the media  This works but takes a long time.  Is there a better way for me to do this?

I was hoping that digitizing the footage in the new project would associate the media with the new project, but I guess not.  So I really have to batch capture AND then consolidate the newly digitized media? It seems like a real waste of time. 

I think I figured out a work around.  I exported the original master clips from the old project as an ALE file and then import the ALE file into a bin in my new project.  When I do this the master clips are now associated with the new project.  Then I can batch capture the footage into my new project.  Are there any draw backs to doing this?  The thing that makes me a little wary is that I don't really have  a clear idea of what ALE files are.

 That method is fine if the media is offline or if you don't mind recapturing.  ALE (Avid log exchange) is for exchanging logged clip information between projects.

Thanks.  Yeah, the media is off line, the problem I was having was that I had to recapture and then consolidate the newly digitized media to make sure the clips were associated with the new project.  The problem with this ALE method is that I lose my locator information.

No, you are correct. What ever project you are currently in is the project that captured media will be associated with. The only way to effectively change project linkage is to consolidate media from Project A while you are in project B, using the open bins command to access media from project A. By choosing the first option in the 2nd consolidate pop-up window (keep master clips linked to media on the original drive) you will have two discreetly different sets of the same media clips, one set associated with project A and one set with project B.

I'm not in front of a machine to try it out, but what happens if you consolidate offline media?  Do you get an error message that says "This media is offline, moron" or does it go ahead and change the project association?

I'm wondering if Just Edit could consolidate his/her offline clips (which in my theory would happen really fast since they're offline; essentially all he/she would be doing is changing the project association) and then recapture them with the correct project association.

IF you are consolidating all offline clips, I believe you get "No Clips to Consolidate (sic)". If you have some clips online, it just skips 'em.

[EDIT] just tried it. No error message at all, the dialog box just goes away.

You're right.   I tried consolidating the pre-digitized clips yesterday and nothing happend, the AVID skipped them.

The other method is to create tape names within your current project, then modify your old clips to those new tape namess. 

They can even be the same as before, but once linked to the current project's tape name, they will be asociated with the new project once digitized.

I tried this yesterday after reading some old posts on the forum.  It didn't work for me, but perhaps I did it incorrectly.  I highlighted the clip in a bin in my new project (a clip I'd copied from the old project) and selected "modify" and then "set source."  Then I typed in a new tape name, this tape seemed to be associated with the new project since the new project's name appeared next to the tape name in the select tape dialog box.  But after I selected the new tape and assured the AVID that I did really did want to change the clip's tape name, the clip was still linked to the old project.  Did I do something wrong?

That will only work if the media is offline.  I thought the OP mentioned redigitizing old clips.  In that case it would work.

If your clips are online, then consolidating is the only way to go.
