    Upgrade help please

    Hey Guys,

I have to upgrade my Xpress Pro 5.7.2 software to Media Composer 2.8.

I have to go the 2.8 route because my system is a Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5 thats running on OS 10.4.9. To my understanding MC 3.0 will only run on the Intel Macs, right?

I cannot find this upgrade option anywhere on the Avid store, only the option to upgrade to MC 3.

Is it still even possible to upgrade my Xpress Pro to MC 2.8. for the ugrade price of $395.00?

Please help or post a link to where I can upgrade.

    Thanks a ton!

    G

Your dongle, once upgraded, is backward compatible.  So, go ahead and upgrade it to v3.0, but download v2.8.x  of MC.  If/when you have a system that'll support v3.0, you'll already have the dongel to run it.

    Re: Upgrade help please

So after I purchase 3.0, don't install it, just upgrade my dongle.  Then download v2.8.

    Is v2.8 a free download after I buy 3.0?

    thanks,

Yes.  As a registered user, you'll have access to the Downlaod Center.  Additionally, v2.8 is also on the front page, where no login is required.

    Re: Upgrade help please

    Randall,

So I'm in the middle of downloading the MC 3.0 upgrade and the MC 2.8 software (which doesn't look like an Xpress Pro upgrade).  I've already downloaded the dongle updater.  What are my steps after that? Do I even install 3.0 or just 2.8?  After installing one or the other, do I then run the dongle updater?  Sorry for all the questions, just want to get it right on the first try.

    thanks

    Re: Upgrade help please

I am running 3.0 on a G5 dual 2.5 right now. So, though not supported, it will run and there is even a Tiger version released today.

Now, as to your questions, if you purchased the upgrade and ran the dongle updater (Instructions can be found at avid.com/dongle) then, if you wish, you do not HAVE to load 3.0. You can go straight to 2.8.3 if you wish.

Do you really want to know what's wrong...or do you just want me to fix it?

Take a look at the ReadMe file included with the downlaod.  There's info about the install.  Make a backup copy of the Avid Projects folder.  They typically are safe, but it's always good to do.  Then, uninstall everything from the old version you have now.  There should be an Avid Uninstaller folder in Applications to do that.

Then, install v2.8.  After that, look for the Dongle Manager application, and use that in conjunction with the Updater file you received to blast the dongle.
