hey...I am going back to work after 3 years out for major surgery. Just wondering if there are more girls now in reality than there were back in the day. I got really sick of the boys club thing, and quit a lot of jobs because my producer would say I was too slow, or over-thinking the story. But i feel that is why I am a good editor. Is it all about being FAST or is it a combo of actuall skill OR, is it just the Post house you woek for?
thanks people.
Well, after being involved in a TON of reality television, I can tell you that you absolutely have to be fast AND a good story teller. Post time and budgets on network reality shows are not getting any larger and the pace of work has only accelerated over the years.
I've worked with many good female editors over the years though.
Do you really want to know what's wrong...or do you just want me to fix it?

Not sure about the rest of the US but in NYC female editors are as common as their male counterparts - be it spots, reality TV, docs, films, etc.
Online editors in NYC is slightly male dominated from my experience (60/40 guestimate).

At our facility in Hollywood, I see more female editors .. both in Reality and Feature Films.

Ditto here. We hve more female editors than male editors, over all. And most of our producer/writers are female as well. Also during 14 years of freelancing, I've had more female clients than male clients by far. The "good old boy" way of thinking is definitely on borrowed time.

I'm one of only 2 guys in our company. We have about 20 employees. But I'm the only editor, if that matters. All the rest are account execs, media buyers, etc...
Mike.
As has already been said, in "Reality" Tv you have to be fast AND a good story teller. Budgets are tight. If you take longer than the next bloke, male or female, you will be replaced.
And, sad to say, even if you are a setter story teller, as long as the faster persons story is "good enough" for the network execs, then they will still get the work.
A lot of the passion is gone from the sausage factory.
I'm not in the reality TV biz, but I would think that in this day and age, if your skills fit the job description your gender has nothing to do with it. At least I hope so . .

I have to say women rule-the-roost from what I have seen, their pace is good getting tea on the table (on time too) - keeping in the kitchen making babies (preferably man-child) - ironing - laundry (a good washboard goes a long way in front of the right woman)... such skills.Oh, my bad... wrong topic.. erm.. this is awkward.... ::slowly backs away::
