    Consolidate question urgent

I have an assistant working offsite. I want him to pick the best takes for a program I am assembling at a different location. I have all the mediafiles on my system. I want him to have a copy of the media so he can view the clips on his system, pick some shots, then email me a bin with his picks.

I'm sure this can be done but I can't figure out how. It doesn't work if I consolidate the mediafiles to a drive I give him, because that creates .new clips and the new clips cannot be linked back to my original mediafiles

Should I copy files at the desktop level? It's harder to identify them that way, obviously. But if I copy, raqther than consolidate, mediafiles and give them to him, he would be working with identical media, not NEW media, and that seems like the key. Once he is done with the mediafile copies, he can delete them

Or, is there a way to use consolidate, or some other function within Avid, to do the same thing?

That's how I do it. If necessary, you can use consolidate to move all of the necessary media to a different drive/partition on your system (Chose to delete original media so that the files are moved and not copied) and then sort that media by creation date to make identification easier.

That's exactly what we figured out, just hoping there might be a way to avoid re-creating all those files just to get them sorted.

If you plan on doing this sort of thing Long-term, you might want to look into a software like Media Mover. It does a nice job of sorting files by project.

I use MDV but since it is limited to sorting by project, it is no help in this case. The project is huge but the media I need to reference is only a small portion of the total in the project.

I tried to use MDV to scan a bin but it never displays any results.

And relink by tape name and timecode does not work for this???

Then use MDV to move all of that projects media into a new folder.  Copy at desktop level that folder onto a new drive. Move your original media back into your OMFI MediaFiles or Avid MediaFiles folder. Make a valid Avid media folder on the new drive and copy all of the media into it.

MDV will work to view the contents in a bin. I use it that way quite often. What version of MDV are you using?

    0.0.2.0

I'll check for a newer version and give it a try.

    Definitely not, tried many times.

There is about 800GB of media in the project and I only need to copy about 20GB... so while I can see how that would work, I'm looking for the simplest way to just sort and copy only the media needed.

MDV v.02 or .03 work with bins. 02 will allow you to browse directly to th ebin in .03 you need to drag the bin into the project window and then click on the bin in the project to see the media associated with it.

I downloaded the June 23 07 version (0.0.3.0). Dragged a bin into the project window. It says "Opening MOB database," goes to 100%, then again says "Opening MOB database and freezes at 98%. Any ideas?

    Re: Consolidate question urgent

Does it work to open the complete project normally? Personally I prefer the v.02 but they both will work I used it this way today.

    Re: Consolidate question urgent

.02 opens normally, will scan all media and organize into projects; if I select a project it will display all the mediafiles in that project. It wil copy files, move files, etc. If I select "Scan Avid Bin" it opens a dialog box where I can select a project and bin. If I open a bin, it says "indexing files," works for a second and then returns to the regular screen with no information displayed.

    Re: Consolidate question urgent

I just did a little poking around and I think I found the fact that v.02 does not like to work with MXF files when you try to open a bin. I was able to get it to do exactly what you described, scan the file and then return with nothing in the project window. V.03 did however work on my system with mxf files when I dragged a bin into the project window.

v.03 sounds like exactly what I need except it keeps freezing at 98%!
