    Transcode Question

    Greetings all,

Attempting to transcode a 720p sequence for SD delivery (DV 25 411) to output via firewire to my JVC BRDY3000.

Created a new SD project, opened the proper HD project bin.  Attempted to transcode and received this error.

    FATAL_ERROR, msg:Assertion failed: tabs (doubleConversionRatio-longConversionRatio) < 0.01 , file:\coresw\ame\src\CompMan\AParamClip.c, line:1228.

My specs are just a little dated, I presently have the DNxcel board. The rest is accurate.

Any clues as to what this might mean?

    Thanks again.

    Bill

    Re: Transcode Question

did you change the format of your sequence first?  right click the sequence and choose set format and change it to the SD version then try transcoding

    Re: Transcode Question

    Thanks Rav,

I did not perform that step.  Newbie to HD fun.

However, I just attempted what you suggested.  Right clicked, went to "modify", "set format" (to 30i NTSC) and received this message.  "Could not change format of sequence.  It isn't compatible with the current project format."  The current project format is 30i NTSC.  The sequence I'm attemtping to re-format is 720p HD 59.94.

Greatly appreciate your assistance.  I'm sure I'm just missing a setting or step.

    Re: Transcode Question

Instead of that, try going to the FORMAT tab at the top of your project window and change it there. Does that work?

    Re: Transcode Question

    Thanks BLKDOG,

Let me step back, what I did was create a new SD Project (30i NTSC) and open the bin that contains the sequence from the HD Project (opened it within the new SD Project).  I duplicated the sequence so as not to modify the original.

Thus, the Format tab indicates rightly that this is a 30i NTSC project.

Or -- are you suggesting that I change the format of my original HD Project and perform the transcode there?

    Appreciative of your input.

Yes, change it in the HD project.

    Re: Transcode Question

    Thanks BLKDOG,

Unfortunately, my only option in the format drop-down is the present project format 720p 59.94.  It gives me no other options.  Same is true when I specifically go into the modify sequence (change format) area as well.

    Re: Transcode Question

Sorry, I was afraid of that.

Thinking here... what if you export a QT ref, open a 30i project and import the QT?

In the console, first type: IgnoreQTRate true

See if that gets you anywhere.

    Re: Transcode Question

I think we have a winner.

Exported QT ref, changed the IgnoreQTRate to "true", imported into 30i project.  Reformatted sequence to 16:9 and bingo.

I really appreciate your help.  Success is a good thing.  If anyone else has a "better" way, feel free to chime in.

    Thanks again.

    Re: Transcode Question

    Just to recap:

    1) Export the HD sequence to a QuickTime Reference.

    2) Create a new 30i SD project.  For future use when outputting to DV, we named our project "HD to SD Delivery."

    3) Before importing the HD QuickTime Reference you created, open Console, type in "IgnoreQTRate true" (without the quotes), and hit [Enter].

    4) Import the HD QT Reference, make a new sequence, slip it into that sequence, and apply the 16:9 stretch effect from the "Reformat" effects group.  (For a cleaner "16x9", you may want to apply an additional 16x9 mask from the "Film" effects group.)

    5) Insert a MiniDV tape in your deck, hit [Record] on your deck, and play the sequence.

    6) Done.

Why would you do this?  The Avid DNxCel will allow realtime downconvert to analog components, but not directly out to MiniDV.  So if your BetaSP deck is broken, and you need to output your HD project for SD to MiniDV tape, here's how you do it.  Thanks for your time.
