    Layering Bug

I've been editing a music video where I synced all the takes in the timeline in multiple tracks above my "edit" track. (Great for match framing and just playing through the takes for inspiration)

When I was finished I wanted to insert a track just above V1 for a quick color grade since the offline was some low contrast Red footage.  The track ended up on the top and I alt-dragged it just above V1.

But the application ignored the layer position completely. Even if I put an effect on the filler it still played like it was on the top track. It didn't matter if I renamed or moved it to another position at all.

Can someone please try to reproduce the issue?

(I found a workaround by putting the CC on V2 after moving the footage to the top track.)

I believe the track numbers determine the hierarchy, not their TL position.

However, I recall recently reading that if you do ALT-add-V-track, you get the option to stick a layer in between two existing layers (actually renaming the higher V-tracks one number upwards).

    Re: Layering Bug

Well the thing is, it does work the right way if I put a clip on the track.

But if it's filler (or filler with an effect applied), it behaves like it was the top track of the sequence.

    Try it yourself...

I would've done as Job said, CTRL+ALT+Y (CMD+ALT+Y on Mac)

Then choose to Add V2, another dialog appears telling you that the track already exists and presents you with two options, Cancel or Insert.  Choosing Insert effectively moves everything on V2 and up to V3 and up and leaves an new empty track at V2.

I'm sure that would do exactly what you're expecting.

    Re: Layering Bug

That's true. It has always worked that way. The correct way to add a track of filler is to use CTRL+ALT+Y and insert a track instead of adding it.

    Re: Layering Bug

I was wrong about it behaving the "right" way. I put a PiP on the added clip and then it showed me the top track under it again...

Coming from FCP, Photoshop and After Effects it's hard to adjust to I guess...

Thanks for the tip Kenton  - Although here in the Mac Forum it would be Command + Alt + Y. Otherwise you screw up the interface.

Well, the button still says "ALT" on it... lol

I know people that still say "Apple" instead of "command"

    Ouch.

I hope you didn't take offense to that.  I put the "smiley" next to it to indicate that I was being a nerd about it.
