Hello All,
My name is Kevin and I just recently directed a short film. Due to budget limitations, I am attempting to edit this film myself instead of going to a pro. I'm okay at the actual cutting, but I don't know the program too well and am not the most computer literate person in the world, so when I run into snags, I haven't got a clue what to do. So any help anyone could give would be appreciated.
My problem is I spent the last two days naming clips. Tonight, I brought some more files in, in a brand new bin, and when I took a look at my old bin, all the file names were gone. The files went back to being 0002T, 05B43 and things like that. When viewing the files in "script" mode, all the notes I made on the files remain, only the names are no longer there.
Any one no why this might have happened and how I can get back what I had without having to retype up names for all the files?
Hi Kevin, Welcome to the Forum. Just so everyone on this forum can help, you need to supply us with your complete system specs. Go to your profile and fill in these details, both hardware and software. After that if you could explain your current process.
Thanks, Steve
Thanks Stephen,
I added my specs.
The problem more specifically is I was going through the files I took off of a P2 card by dragging into Avid MediaFiles and opening through the media tool, reviewing the footage, naming the files so I knew which shot it was, making notes on the individual takes. Then when done, I brought the files from the next P2 card into a brand new bin. When I did this, I went back to my first bin to find all the file names went back to the original names they had on the P2 card (0072N and the sort). All the notes I made on the takes remained. I still know that 0072N has a boom mic visibile but I don't know what scene it is. Is there a way to get back the bin with the files already named or do I have to go through all this footage again? Any help you could give would be more than appreciated.
Thank You.

Thanks for the reply Kenton. Your post has got me thinking this is a bug in the program. At first I was thinking when I dragged the new files in that I also accidentally dragged the old files as well and their original names overrode the names I created. That theory didn't make much sense though because the original files had the new names I had given them in the media tools where I was dragging from. So yeah, it must be a bug, but it was just odd because in my case it was the entire bin and it happened right after dragging alot of new files in, so it just felt like I had to have done something wrong.
Although I have give up on my original theory, it did bring to mind an interesting question. When putting the P2 cards onto my computer, as recommended on this site, I put each card in its own folder. Card one in Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1, Card two in Avid MediaFiles/MXF/2. This seemed like a good idea to help keep things organized, but when I open Media Tool, it just lists all the files in one big lidt. They are not separated by folder. So the sorting I did when putting the files onto my computer is rendered null and void when bringing them into the Avid. Is there a way in Media Tool to just see a specific folder?
Also, whatever casued the problem I had, is there a way to fix it without doing it all over again? Is there a way to retrieve the old bin from a back-up file without effecting any of the new bins I've created since the problem?
