Hi,
im thinking about buying a pocket mini external drive for example Iomega Silver Lineor TrekStor DataStation Pocket x.u
Those drives are handier, small and easy to transport.
Im thinking of using it as a musiclibrary, but also as a drive where my OMFI MediaFiles are on. That means it should be fast enough to edit on Avid with this drive.
Now my question: are those pocket drives fast enough? I already have the experience to edit on normal-sized drives and it works fine. Only problem is that they are so big to carry around.
So what do you think?
Thanks
Make sure that the drive is 7200rpm. I wouldn't think about editing on a slower drive.
The spindle speed doesn't have a lot of bearing in this case. Port powered drives may be just fast enough for DV25 or HDV, but I wouldn't be too surprised if the playback was choppy.
I've successfully used lacie, iomega, and seagate pocket drives over the last couple of years. Occasional stutter when scrubbing through a timeline, but nothing that ever compromised an edit. These where just :30 TV spot projects, and SD (at DV resolution). I once pressed them into service for an HD edit (720p P2 material) when it was all I had handy: Occasional stutters on playback, general lag in accessing (I could hear the poor things spinning like crazy as they seeked files) Definately wouldn't suggest them for an HD/HDV work. Not sure what hardware you run, but you'll want to make sure the usb/firewire ports provide a sufficient amperage (all ports will kick out a 5v current, but not all provide enough amps behind the volts to run the drives-macbooks for example, don't)
good luck
