A client of mine had two Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200.10 drives fail one 3 weeks ago and the other just yesterday. The on-board electronics were faulty and I was able to retrieve the data by swaping out circuit boards from one of my personal drives.
Does anyone know if I can get a replacement circuit boards for both drives. Seagates warranty is up and Seagate doesn't sell parts!
Circuit Board info:
Seagate:100355589TYCO 100344105
Chip info 10040225 Seagate

Best thought would be to locate boards from used drives and swap out. Why not recommend the client upgrade their drives?

Julian, once components start to fail on a drive there's often very little to be gained by keeping it alive. Given the current prices I'd swap both drives for new, since you've recovered the data.
those drives are about 200 usd ea depends where you get them what would it cost you in time to redigitise the files on them ??? i bet more than the drives themselves
i just upgraded to mc 3.0 and installed a new os drive 160 gig (45.00 usd microcenter.com) i kept the old one for backup if somthing were to happen i could just pop it in and i would be up and going at 45 bucks for a drive we all should format and load avid in spare drive for an emergency no more "i need this to go to the client by tomorrow" rants i just pop in the back up drive and bingo bango im making pictures again

Thanks guys for your replies - my client understands the costs involved - They are looking just to replace the boards - They are fully aware of the cost for hard drives.
The data on the drives were successfully transfered to new hard drives purchased after the failures!
Looks like its hopeless and it's too bad the warranty is up! Plus the hard drive must be on its way out or the PSU is killing them!Ah well is was a worth a shot to ask! Thanks everyone!
Actually PSU issues can be a hidden cause of a range of problems. About two years ago I had a problem I couldn't track down. It appeared to be hard drives on the way out - occasionally the BIOS wouldn't recognise them or they would suddenly drop off line. After much abortive fault-finding, in desperation I replaced the 550W PSU with a 750W unit. The problems vanished, never to return on that system.
