I only want to post to ensure you of your customers experience with your software,
How should I put it... Well i first got Avid Xpress Pro 4.8.1 or something, that installation was more than troublesome and I never got through it. Some time later, I tried with Xpress 5.8.1 (latest) and the installation was better but then when I tried to start it it got stuck initializing audio, probarly because I'm running a Realtek card. I threw it away and went with Premiere Pro (Adobe's) and it works fine...
And today I tried Media Composer 3.0, everything worked OK with the setup and so on. But when I was about to start it: "your system is not lisenced to run this software." That's it was my thought... I'm going over to Adobe's software completely now. Your programs has too many compadability problems with hardware.
Be sure to keep in mind that I have upgraded my computer since my experience from (Xpress 4.8.1) to today. Now I'm more than angry with you, wasting time and money on your products. It was a big mistake! You seriously need to fix the Realtek problem, it's killing your compnay:

I didn't buy any external hardware from Realtek either, I got their sound card from a Asus' motherboard and they are also a leading manufacturer when it comes to hardware. See my point? You're losing more than they do...
Hope you'll imporve your products in the future, I'm done with you (at least for the coming years...). I'll stick with Adobe's prodcuts so I don't get any serious issues with never-released-fixes and bad support.
Goodbye
And we wish you well.
With professional editing systems, it is important to fully inviestigate your options prior to purchasing. If you had done so, you would have known, before spending any time - or money - at all, that Avid software has very specific hardware requirements.
These hardware specifics allow Avid editors to work with the very high level of functionality and flexibility that had made it a leader in this industry for a long time.
It needs what it needs. Respectfully, your argument is the equivalent of purchasing a work vehicle that has a diesel engine, but being unhappy it does not run on cheaper gasoline.
Avid is not interested in supporting the most-commonly used audio card. The goal their eyes remain set on is performance. They will sacrifice the wide, easy road of hardware compatibility to maintain that focus.
They understand their editing solutions are not for everyone. We wish you the best of luck with your other editing options. There's room enough in the world for other editing solutions for other folks, who, like yourself, have some different priorities.
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. (Proverbs 15:1 NIV)

Most intriguing about this post is the fact that the thread starter tried 4.8.1 and it never worked.. so threw that in the corner.. then waited more then a year to try 5.8x release to discover again it would not work.. then MC3.0 which is a paid upgrade btw also did not work.
Now that would account for roughly 2500 dollars worth of software just being unused. Thread starter.. if you do go PP please contact me off list.. i want to get your dongle and licenses as you do not use them anyway.. i am willing to pay
Ok.. enough fun.. The "error" you got with MC3 is the fact you don not have a (upgraded) dongle in your system.. nothing more nothing less...
As for realtek there are many working with Realtek since HP is being old with those cards.. just not all realteks will work ... research before you "buy" is always good. And a new SB live will break your bank for 30 bucks at MAX.. and will save you all the trouble in getting software for steep prices and then not using them

The Avid software is, very much, a professional's tool. Most professionals are very proficient at thoroughly researching their tools before putting them into an asset schedule.
Thousands of Avid installations are done each day with very little trouble. You just have to be aquatinted with the skill set necessary to research, read and implement an Avid setup. I'm actually happy that this software has not yet been more commoditized than it already is. Sometimes "Plug and Play" really isn't a good thing.
Do you really want to know what's wrong...or do you just want me to fix it?

Sometimes "Plug and Play" really isn't a good thing.
Hence the reason it is often referred to as "plug and pray"
But a commonly used hardware doesn't mean it's bad. Take Nvidia for example, they have a big market share and their best card is the fastest on standard PC these days. And myself, I didn't pay for the software - my work did. And they decided to upgrade when this (latest) was released. But I made them also get an alternetive (Premiere Pro) for the computers with a Realtek sound card or any other hardware that causes problem.
You are also aware that Avid is losing market share right, Apple's FCP is earning some... The software should be compatible with the hardware (not the other way around).
Still I'm suprised that you didn't release any patch, which basiclly says that you're more interesting in making money than a good application. Because the fix doesn't have to affect the other, maybe a just "Realtek" fix (so the people who have other doens't have to get it).
You know that you aren't speaking to anyone working for Avid here...right? We're all Users.
Like we said, Avid is a professional tool requiring a professional skill set. A lot of what makes this software the best NLE also makes it more important that someone who has more experience is at the helm. If you aren't up to that level yet in your experience, then a more consumer-oriented product like premier may be more in your wheelhouse anyway.
If you are ever prepared to step up to the big-leagues though, we will be happy to walk you through anything you need to get the app up and running. FOr the amount of money your employer laid out, I would think they would want to capitalize on their investment.
Some of the employees are working with Avid, and I know it's a great tool. And I've the experience... Though, still dissapointed. But who knows, might be working in the future. For now PP works fine. At least the community is working

You sound as if you are very new to this whole thing. If you are interested in working it out, we'll be here to help.
the software should be compatible with the hardware (not the other way around).
I disagree. The Avid is a system solution. They are very clear on what machines they test and support. This is not some piece of software that will run on any machine.

The thing is don't peak too early in life. Currently at MC 3.0
AFAIK, all of the certified HP (xw8xxx) systems that Avid approves include RealTek audio cards. So they do work with Avid software, but I'm sure there are some reasons why a DIY box with a RealTek card has issues and the certified HP doesn't.
The "not licensed to run this software" "error" is not an error. You haven't paid to upgrade your dongle to run the software that you've downloaded.
Avid is very clear about what computers their software will run on reliably.
If you try it on non-approved gear you may have a less then satisfactory experience.
Professionals require their gear to run with as few problems as possible. Avid qualifies very few systems outright as very few are made to the standard they need to be to function correctly and with consistency. You can't drive a Porche using an engine that was designed for a moped and expect it to work as well as the original Porche engine. Sorry. It just doesn't work that way.
As was stated earlier... spend the lousy 30 dollars for a SoundBlaster card and kiss your realtech problem goodbye.
MAN! I am so sick of people who *** and whine about their poor experience with Avid software when they don't run it on qualified gear! WAKE UP AND READ BEFORE YOU BUY PEOPLE! I'm not saying don't try it on non-certified gear. I have had great experiences running the software on both qualified and non-qualified computers. But what I am saying is that if it doesn't work on non-qualified equipment don't blame Avid for it... its you who is trying to run it on gear they haven't passed for a reason.
!rant out!
So my new wife asks me about my "Avid Forever" tattoo... I told her she's an old girlfriend who was always coming up with new things for me to try...
