I think that would be great news in avid system.
This would be great, especially combined with the ability to import graphics without sacrificing quality. The locked resolution can be really frusterating when working with high quality images...
No thanks
I have mixed feelings about this. One of Avid's strengh is adherence to standards. In FCP, Premiere and After Effects the user is often relied upon to make decisions about things like frame size, field-order and pixel aspect. In Avid those things are defined by what the project format is. I rarely see things like field-order issues coming out of Avid suites (and usually only from footage imported from AE or something), but I've seen many issues like that from FCP and AE where the users have either forgotten or not known to set the field order settings.
I would like to see Media Composer retain it's firm standards-based format settings, but add the ability to manipulate video footage from a larger-than-project source. Something like 'Pan and Zoom' but for video.

I agree with keeping standard project formats. But I also see great value in being able to zoom in on a HD clip in a SD project and not lose resolution. In our current workflow we are still delivering SD but shooting HD. To be able to zoom and crop without quality loss would be helpful. Also being able to handle higher resolution files in an HD project would be a great feature.

I vote for this as well. I think the ability to mix and match works well as it stands, but being able to move around a larger piece of video would be nice. I know several people that don't shoot anything besides a medium on interviews and then "punch in" to pull a close up shot.
I would like to add that the way Media Composer deals with HD in a SD timeline makes it much faster than competing products. If the resolution independence could be added via p pan and zoom type plug in we could have the best of both. Faster speeds when we do not need to scale but resolution independence when we do.
Looking forward for hearing details about the new features introduced by MC 5: it's not resolution indipendence but a step in that direction AFAIU. Being able to manipulate HD clips within an SD frame with no quality loss is a must, and regarding the custom frame size I happen to need it from time to time, and many of us will need that too sometimes soon, with file based deliveries for the web and systems like Pandora, WatchOut and the like. Whatever will come it will take some time but will be well done, as always with Avid.

it's been in DS for ummm... maybe a decade now......
So far from new...
maybe the news is that so many folks are not aware of it..... or maybe that's not entirely news either......

There are standards above HD. Also, the NLE is subject to the formats being created - cameras like RED shoot frame sizes greater than 1920 x 1080, Alexa will, and I suspect DSLR will at some point in the near future. What you deliver out the back end will meet a different set of standards - that is the finishing and mastering process. There is tremendous value in accessing all the pixels, color space, and bith depth of the original format.
