How to maintain firewire drives active ?

    Hi.

I have medias spread across several external firewire drives (Western Digital My Book II Studio) and when I moved the playhead to another part of the sequence ( 1 hour ), I stare at the spinning beachball while the disk wakes up.

    FCP users can use Disksomnia

Does somebody knows if there is a soft that do the same with Avid products ?

    Thanks.

Why do you think it has anything to do with Avid?

this utility deals with hard disk only, neither with FCP nor Avid.

and should run on your Mac with an Avid the same way as on a Mac with FCP.

I only hesitate using such utilities to avoid any extentions conflict,

but you can always try it and uninstall it if you feel that your Avid is acting slow.

Hi Erem, i'd look into why the disk is going to sleep in the first place. Firstly if you have 'put disks to sleep when possible' unticked in system preferences/energy saver then it would be a problem with disk itself which you might want to check with the manufacturer. Otherwise buy a better drive that doesn't have automatic hardware sleeping. There's some really good firewire raids out there and I use the caldigit which works great for me but theres heaps of others like G-Tech, sonnet etc..

    Many thanks for your replies.

"Why do you think it has anything to do with Avid?"

I've asked Digital-Heaven if the soft works with Avid products and they say that :

Disksomnia only does its magic when Final Cut (Pro or Express) is running. We may release a version that works without that restriction in the future but we're focused on FCP stuff at the moment.

For my system pref, it's ok. I think the problem comes from Western Digital fact.

I've got many crashes with LaCIe drives, so I've bought those drives because of the price (and a promo ticket).

Today, i've got 5x500Gb and 2x1To firewire 800 drives on separate cards without any other problem, and I would like to use them till theyre end of live.
