MC recognises my JVC GY100 camera, but wont control it

Just installed MC3 and all went well.  I set up a new 720p25 HDV project.  When I try to capture using the JVC GY 100 camera Avid recognises the deck, but wont control it.

I cant  FF, or  RW .

When I clickPlay the capture window shows me the live view through the camera lens, but doesnt play the tape thats in the camera.

If I switch the camera to VTR mode I get an error telling me there has been a communication error. AArgh.

I also tried setting up a 720p25 Standard project - same result.

Havent updated my specs but it is installed on an HP xww8400 workstation bought from an Avid reseller so should be up to spec.

I just opened a standard def project, switched the tapes and put a tape in with standard def (50i) footage and Avid now plays it perfectly.  So Standard Def capture works, 720p25 doesnt.  Do Ineed to switch soemthing somerwhere.  I have the playback output on the camera set to auto, and have also tried setting it to HDV, neither works for the HDV tape.

    Any one got any clues??

Got it sorted - there is a switch in the camera menu, not  the VTR menu, which also has to be set to output HDV.  Ha -  not Avids fault at all.

I'd like to take the opportunity to publicly thank Marianna and Jeoff who both helped me out with the download problems I had - cheers m'dears.

Hi Grayboy. So where you able to capture 25p HDV footage from your 100 using MC3 and edit effectively ? I own a 200 and was holding off upgrading to MC3 and capture 24p HDV, since I read in the compatible cameras under QA section, that only the 250 was compatible and not the 110 nor the 200. Strange since the 200 and the 250 are technically the same. So you would say go upgrade?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi videovic

I am trying to capture my first 720p25 footage - and struggling.  Now the audio isnt in   synch. Just trying to figure out why.

So no, based on my experience in the last two hours, dont upgrade just yet.  But here must be more people out there capturing with the JVC range - anyone got anything to share??

When I capture HDV the audio gets out of sync when I'm viewing but when I play it back it is perfect. The bits move over fine, the system just isn't keeping up while viewing real time.

    Hi Scott

I was hoping that was all it was, but when I play back from the timeline it is still way out of whack.  Could this be an nvidia driver problem?. If so anyone know what driver version I need for my Geforce 7950 GT card?  I am currently on ver 6.14.10.9371

Oh No!!!.  Will it never end?  I also read that the Geforce cards arent supported - only the Quadro cards, and they are expensive.

I can capture standard def in a 25i project and this stays in sync, whihc sort of eliminates the graphics card.  But if the camera is the problem how come I  can capture 720p25 into Liquid from the same camera with no problems - wouldnt that suggest that the sync issue is particular to Avid, and not an issue with the camera?

Geforce cards have NEVER been officially qualified in any Avid systems (even Xpress DV). But many, including I, have used them with great success. The secret is to stay with the cards you know others have used.

Liquid likely has figured out how to compensate for the sync during capture. Since Liquid and MC are based on 2 different technology (Liquid is AVI based vs Avid's MXF), Avid will need to find a way that fits with MC.

"Geforce cards have NEVER been officially qualified"  - hmmm - someone should tell my Avid reseller.  I have discovered they also installed a Realtek audio card which I thought was a big no no as well.  Hasten to add I have inherited this system and had nothing to do with the ordering of it.

Just to eliminate it can anyone point me in the direction of the latest Nvidia drivers - their website seems to sugget that they are on ver 175, which is way beyond my ver 6.14.10.  Can this be right?  The system is less than a year old I think.

We`ve been waiting a long long time for a MC Version which supports JVC-Cameras and the 720p-format. I was really glad that avid made a big announcement (You told us we need to change...). But now there are again some "issues" with JVC-Cams. I´ve just bought this absolute useless upgrade. Thank you Avid !!!! How long will it last, until we get the next upgrade ? 2,3, 4 months. When will you really, really listen to your customers ?

Re: MC recognises my JVC GY100 camera, but wont control it

Just exported a Quicktime movie using the "out of synch" footage - guess what - its in synch!  So how well can I edit footage that looks like it has been badly dubbed.  Maybe its a skill I'll pick up.

I couldnt export a QT ref, is this normal for HDV?

Zoppito - somone is going to tell you that its your own fault - you should have read all the info about 3.0 not supporting the 100 series.  Not me though, I feel your pain.  And I really wanted to be nice to Avid cos I thought finally I could get the most out of my camera, but still the frustration continues.

Yes. Limitation of QT. Check the Help file for more info.

Could it be that your system isn't able to keep up with the HDV? Try transcoding to DNxHD and see how it is.

Re: MC recognises my JVC GY100 camera, but wont control it

Transcoded and it is better, but not right. If I go into the green mode in the video quality menu it gets worse, so does this suggest that the overlay cant keep up?

Also have a problem whenever I close down Avid.  Just before it exits I get  an error message saying there was a problem with Avid Editor and it needs to close down, the information you were working on may be lost.  Its one of those messages that wants you to send a report to microsoft.  Anyone else getting this?
