Yeah, its a be-atch for the tech and customer liason people when the marketdroids and suits have little or no understanding of large segments of thier existing customer base and even less appreciation for those same Avid techies  / customer liasons that are truly the only reason many more people have not turned their back on Avid.  Yet, I'll bet, no matter how many times I (and others) have pointed that out to the suits whenever we get face time with them, Marianna et al have not seen any "appreciation" in their paychecks.

I take it that once you've attempted / made the update to 3.0, you can't downgrade to 2.8.x again should things not work so well?

    Of course you can.

Really?  How?  What is the procedure to "reset" the dongle for 2.8.3 after you have passed it through the 3.0 updater?

I don't believe it is a simple matter of application uninstall and at most a manual registry clean-out before re-installing 2.8.x since there are licensing code changes made to the dongle contents for which, last I checked, there is no "revert to previous" option in the dongle updater.

Actually, that's just what it is Bill. All of Avid's dongles are fully backwards compatible. you just uninstall the software, reinstall the older version and Bammo. you're up and running.

    Kenton.VanNatten:

    Blofelds Cat:
the only gripe I have is that there is still no facility, directly within Avid, for keyframeable panning & scanning of HD video resolutions in an SD project

    Reformat>Pan and Scan is keyframable.

There is a basic misunderstanding of the reformat function which, in itself, is the direct result of a misunderstanding concerning the practical realities of Avid's ability to 'mix and match differing frame resolutions in the same Timeline.

reformat > pan and scan is limited by the project resoution, not the frame resolution of the footage. This means that while one can indeed bring HD resolutions into an SD project, the original HD footage is actually scaled down to the SD frame size in the same way in which a hi-res still image is scaled down when it is directly imported (as opposed to being utilised via the Avid Pan & Zoom Effect).

In such an environment, the utilisation of the reformat effect merely results in either the cropping or letterboxing of the scaled HD frame; the 'zooming' of which - whether as keyframed movement or locked-off for the duration of the shot - will produce exactly the same unacceptable optical artefacts as per the zooming of native SD footage.

By contrast, the Grass Valley Edius Pro approach to mixing different  resolutions in the Timeline is not to scale down HD resolutions to SD frame size, thereby allowing the Editor to take advantage of the larger HD canvas to effectively select a portion equivalent to the SD canvas; another advantage of this is that the HD footage can be zoomed to a greater degree with less obtrusive optical artefacts than that which would result from the same portion of the frame which has been zoomed in the Avid scaled-down environment.

The only shortcoming with the Edius approach is that it doesn't appear to be keyframeable, i.e. the Editor is limited to a locked-off zoom.

    cheers.

We’re sorry! The system ID you entered is not valid for this upgrade offer.

why i'm keep getting this message? This is for the upgrade offer from xpress pro to media composer 3.0. I paid $495.00 for the box version of media composer. I got this upgrade from avid reseller after the promotion. How come on the sticker it says

UPDTR LBL XPRO 5.6 TO MC 2.7 AND NOT 2.8?

    Thanks for any help.

Re: Media Composer v3.0 / NewsCutter v.7.0 RELEASED!

     Hi Rob

I am working in SD PAL 25i project with local scsi storage. On a note about the general performace of the computer, applications such as Procoder and After effects seem to work accross all processor cores and use them more.

Colour Finesse version 2.1.8, latest version, I upgraded from 2.1.5 but no joy. Using elastic gasket version 2 for AVX 1.5.

CF has a standard programme error fault when promoted to full user interface and the only option is to quit it, it does not bring down the editor. When used with the effects editor not all functions are available but seems to work as it did before in this unpromoted view (with the colour wheels half off the screen and the standard avid effects editor interface).

     Rob

With a 1080 50 project I have reached a cpu usage of an average of 40% accross all cores whilst rendering at standard quality, if rendering in high quality it reverts back to single core rendering. If playing and rendering on the fly it reaches up to 70% but I can only get 1 stream of to play realtime in green mode at any HD resolution.

If you purchased after March 17th, and it is still not working. (Dongle will not upgrade).  Just call them.  Same thing happened to me; they were very easy to work with over the phone.  And I got the upgrade.

    ronn:

Another 3 hours downloading 3.0 -- with the same result. The zip file is 0.98MB both times (with no reported errors downloading) and hangs mid-way unzipping, saying there's an error in the file - which appears to be the DIO and/or the protools bits. I'll try again later, bypassing my wifi router. FYI I tried unzipping on different computers (one XP and one Vista) with effectively the same results.

Hey Ronn, did you figure this out? I'm having the same problem. Decompressing just freezes up. Tried to download again, same thing. Also tried unzipping to various machines/drives, no joy.

Anyone else getting decompression errors with the download file??

Hey Towerfan - I was ultimately successful but have no idea why. I downloaded it 3 times on different computers, all unfortunately over my wildblue satellite modem which is very slow compared to DSL or Cable. I even downloaded one from a different link Marianna provided but it didn't work either. The 3rd time was a charm, it unzipped fine and installed fine. I think I just got lucky and had no hiccups during that 3 hours. Maybe it was a traffic jam on Avid's servers because of the demand.

Thanks for the reply Ronn, I appreciate it. Glad you got it going!

Marianna? You out there? What are the odds of Avid mailing me a program disc if I can't get this figured out?? I'll try my best with the download but I'm willing to pay postage or whatever if I need a disc.
