    Before you install MC 3.0....

This is in the Read Me but we wanted to post it here as well.

If you are upgrading from Tiger to Leopard in order to run MC 3.0, it is recommended that you do not use the software install to upgrade from Tiger. Rather, you need to install a completely new OS. You can do this by doing a simple archive and install or, if you are able, a complete wipe and install is even better.

There are many extensions in Tiger that conflict in Leopard with the Avid software and a fresh OS will make your life a whole lot easier.

I think it's important to point out here that IF you are planning to upgrade to MC 3.0, you MUST install Leopard.  MC 3.0 is not supported on Tiger.  Also, QT 7.4.5 is approved (per ReadME)

Re: Before you install MC 3.0....

As a poor college student who recently purchased MC 2.8 academic I have a question regarding the free upgrade to 3.0

I know that I am grandfathered in for this upgrade but has there been any word on when my eligibility for this upgrade will no longer be valid.  I ask because at the moment I don't run leopard and can't afford it until a few months.  If I dl the upgrade from Avids website will I be able to hold onto it for a few months and upgrade it at that time or will I have to upgrade my system in a quicker fashion.

Any information on this would of course be appreciated

    Thanks!

I've always understood that there is not any kind of "upgrade" option for Academic versions.  You just buy it again at the Academic price. $295

The "grandfather" clause was for those that purchased the retail version after 3/17/08  - or so I've always thought.  Maybe things have been changed recently?

There will be more answers after the release, I'm sure (and probably more questions) Smile

Re: Before you install MC 3.0....

The Readme still states that only the NVidia Cards are supported, I have a mac pro with an ATI Radeon HD 2600.  Will this card work with MC3 or do I need to get the 7600 that the system reqs suggest?  Also, is the GeForce 8800 card supported?

If you need to know, I have:

I'm running MC3 Beta on an 8-core Harpertown with the ATI HD 2600 XT... been just perfect for me.  Hold tight with what you have... the Harpertown MacPro is superior to the first generation Clovertowns in almost every way... with the unfortunate exception of being unable to run OSX Tiger easily.  Almost always the stock Mac video card is just fine, so long as the VRAM is adequate, which it is in this case.

Re: Before you install MC 3.0....

I got my infor from a post Marianna made earlier

    miwos,

Media Composer Academic v3.0 will be available in June 2008 and the price for Academic is $295 US MSRP.

However anyone that buys MC Academic after March 17th gets 3.0 free.

    Marianna

Maybe the policy recently changed?  For my sake I sure hope so, but either way I am more than satisfied with 2.8 at the moment.  Guess tomorrow will bring more answers for everyone

    Todd,

Don't you have this backwards? Did you mean to say that the Harpertown Mac Pro is superior to the first generation Clovertowns?

Re: Before you install MC 3.0....

Is QT 745 required?  How about 741?  And OS 10/5.2?

I'm downloading 3.0 now, and would like to avoid 10.5.3 if possible, due to the known Photoshop bug.

I'm similarly skittish of QT upgrades, due to multiple QT upgrade fiascos.

    Thanks,

    Jim

7.4.5 is not required and 10.5.2 is fine for 3.0.

Re: Before you install MC 3.0....

I should amend my response above. Avid is saying that they have not been testing 7.4.1 so they are recommending only 7.4.5. However, I have been running 7.4.1 all through beta and everything has been fine.
