That really depends on what kind of work your doing. I'd go for Symphony if your onlining a normal programme unless you have some compositing to do.

The demo for DX looked like it would handle that really well.

If just doing a simple online, stay with Symphony.  If you need to do comlpex compositing and graphics, go with the DS.

I agree. The color correction tool in Symphony Nitris DX is a vast improvement over earlier versions - it's much closer to DaVinci type capabilities.

Hi Larry, I haven't had the chance to jump on the new 3.0 yet. We are waiting to see what bugs shake out. What is different in the new color corrector? I'm guessing it's not something uber-cool like Tangent devices.:) Is it power windows in the CC tool? More colors?

     Hi Michael:

You are wise to wait out the shake out. Personally, I never ever buy the .0 version of anything. One look at the problems being reported on this forum as people upgrade will show you why. Now that being said, there have been some major improvements in MC 3.0, however the color correction tool essentially is the same as previous versions. The Symphony Nitris DX color correction tool, however, is a phenomenal improvement, and very close to DaVinci type capabilities. You can read my review of the recent Washington demo here for full details. And here is a video demonstrating some of the latest capabilities.

Larry is correct.  Wait for things to shake out.  Also, there should be significant upgrades coming down the pike for Avid|DS so I would certainly wait and check it out before making any decisions now.  Best of luck.

Is this documented anywhere, or can you elaborate?  In none of the Avid roadshows I attended did I ever hear of improved CC capabilities.  I don't recall reading about it in the Readme either ...

Re: Symphony Nitris DX or DS Nitris?

Randall, I've searched and can't find any full description of all the new features in Symphony and I was only able to get a quick overview and play around a little, because so many people wanted to be hands on as well. But I saw many more tabs of secondary parameters with many additional adjusters I've never seen in previous versions. The specific ones I played around with were selective color blending which allows different primaries and secondaries to be combined to create a third, as an artist does blending different colors of paint into a new color. I also played around with spot color, which allows you to define different regions within the same scene to selectively apply different parameters to. It sure would be nice to find something like a full blown car brochure that would provide all the details on color correction. A search of the knowledge base for Symphony Nitris DX users guide was fruitless.

{EDIT} I should also add that the color correction tool in Composer Nitris DX is essentially the same as previous versions - no changes.

Re: Symphony Nitris DX or DS Nitris?

    Larry,

Having just had a very small play on a v3 Symphony last week at an Avid New Thinking show i found no extra functions and was told there by Avid UK that there were none. Now i didn't take too much time to explore the CC tool but it looked no different to the previous Symphony CC tools. Like you i can find no info in Read Mes or any of the literature so if someone can point us in the right direction or clarify the additional tools that would be great.

There is something very strange going on...?

I was told (as a secret) about the great new CC tools pre-Nab.

But post NAB nobody knows anything... there is no mention in any offical literature and my dealer is in the dark?

    intriguing!!

It would be interesting to know who told you this "Secret" as changes to the CC tool were never a part of any program I was a part of. This sounds like a reseller trying to sound like they know more than they do.

It's also why Avid employes are not supposed to talk about any features in any release, ever.

Yes but Larry asserts he actually saw it.

    So what's the story ?
