    5.1/7.1 surround

I'm working with Media Composer, ProTools, and DVDstudioPro. Chances are I'll work in stereo untill I send it to ProTools, and then finish the surround version straight to DVDstudio, but is there any way of doing more than stereo in MediaComposer? I'd imagine there has to be considering 4+ channels is standard for HD, and even on SD it's used a lot with formats like Dbeta which support 4 channels.

So is there a way to adjust my audio configuration to multichannel in MC? Either way, does anyone know how to set up DVDstudio for surround?

MC can do up multi channel out but you need to set it to Direct Out. You can't mix surround sound from it. With proper hardware you can bring in an encoded file for output to tape. BUT you can't mix. In fact you can't even manipulate the encoded file at all or it will destroy the encoding.

    Re: 5.1/7.1 surround

I use a StudioComm surround controller to accommodate both the Adrenaline and a Sonic Solutions DVD encoding and authoring system.  The StudioComm has two surround and two stereo inputs with solo and muting for each channel.

The Adrenaline outputs 8 discrete channels of audio via optical which feeds a Alesis optical to analog converter which feeds the StudioComm controller which controls the 5.1 speaker system.  Using Discrete Output in the MC Audio Tool, you can patch the output channels to any speaker.

When cutting multicam concert videos, I can monitor the 5.1 surround or 2.0 stereo mixes provided by the audio house.  It's several pieces of additional hardware but it works great and clients love to hear the surround mix played back with picture right off the Avid.
