Does anyone know how to generate a cloud of dust using just AVID Media Composer and the Boris RED 4 FX plug-in? Buying a brand new program just to generate dust is not an option. Can someone show me how to work the problem with the tools I already own?
I assume the FX plug has the smoke/fire filter built in? That would be a good start.

Yes, play around with "fire" generator (smoke is an option in it) or maybe with the the "cloud" generator under the effects menu.
I've used both in the past to add smoke or fog to scene. it just takes alot of tweaking to get it looking right and it's a slow render.
good luck.
I've also seen people previously suggest the Caustics filter, which might be able to provide you with a very thin wispy type smoke if that's what you're looking for.
Gonna sound like a broken record, I know, but anything to do with particles that you want to make - especially dust and fire - can be done really easily in particleIllusion (they're presets) with little or no experience.
You can also download a fully functioning free demo (one month license) so wouldn't even have to pay for it.
