Yasch:Once rendered though, your RAM is cleared, as the Avid links directly to the precompute, which is like any other imported video
If that's true, I should not get a black screen playing back the clip after rendering the P & Z and then deleting the hi-rez image, yet I do. If I keep the hi-rez image, all is well. Any ideas?
BTW, done all the usual things like rebuilding site settings, creating new user files, rebuilding database files.

Are you deleting the image from your hard drive, or the master clip from your bin?
Yanky Ascher Jewish Educational Media | Avid Editor
I'm deleting the image from the hard drive. Not deleting anything within Avid.
That's odd.
I just tested it, to be sure. If the effect is unrendered and I delete the original image, it will result in a black screen, as you said. But once rendered, as long as I don't make any adjustments, the render stays.
The only reason I can think of is my system is telling me the effect is rendered, but perhaps it is, in fact, not rendered at all.

What would cause that? Corrupt database?
That's why I had tried database rebuilds, but the problem persisted. I'm not at my Avid right now, but I'll have to do some more exploring and experimenting tomorrow, after I deliver my show.
Thanks for your input and please keep me posted.
The work I do requires lots of pan and zooms. Although the rendered quality is great, I believe that the pan and zoom is one of Avid's weaker points.
I'd love to hear how other documentary editors deal with their images. I find it very difficult to animate my images in after effects whenever I want to add rotation.
There are other plug-ins you can 'buy' that do rostrum work. Moving Pictures springs to mind, but having never used it, I can't comment.
The other way (if you have it) is to use AvidFX (Boris Red). Little quirky - i.e. clumsy to keyframe, and I think you have to set something weird up in your render options - but actually delivers a much better product than P&Z and allows you to 'move' in a 3D space.
Can talk you through AvidFX if you need...

Yes, Please!
The plugin does a check (not sure of interval) to see if the file is there. If cannot be found, it will revert to unrendered state. Since there is pic, it will be black.
Regarding the playback, yes Avid is aware of this. Supposedly there was confusion between the beta testers. It may revert back to pre 2.7.2. behavior - not sure.

So Dom, is this a "known bug" on the list of many, or is this just considered normal operation for P & Z, that I would not be able to delete the hi-rez image even after the effect is rendered?
I don't know. My guess would be default by design (since the plugin does the check). I will try to check other versions of the software if the behaviour is the same.
What's really odd about this is apparently Yanky's platform DOES allow for the hi-rez to be deleted, yet still maintain the full rendered file. I wonder if any other users can replicate his results.

What is the bug that you are referring to, checking the source of rendered pan and zooms or the quality of real-time playback?
