using "force opengl 1.5" worked to keep avid from crashing on startup. so you were right, I didn't need to softmod the 8800gt. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get Avid to recognize my audio card. If I can do that, everything should be a go. (Everything booted up fine with 3.0 otherwise, got video playback, so I'm almost in business)

i have same card.. installed on vista 64 biz version.. and cant run mc3.. hungs on startup.. if you will have some results post here tweaks please..
btw on GF 7800 gtx and xp sp2 system works very good.. but vista fails with 8800 GTX and 8800 GT .. 8800 GTX i have tryed to emulate Quadro 4600 but it not works..
so you told about opengl force.. how you did it?
i've got an old version of riva tuner, but with a little digging, if this doesn't work you should be able to find it. and don't forget your friend google.
on the "Main" Riva Tuner menu, under "Driver Settings" hit "Customize" select the "OpenGL" button. go to the "compatability" tab. select 1.5 from the OpenGL version string override.

ohh man.. it came alive! :)
now will try on 8800 GTX
thank you!

So as I understand it, you don't need to soft-mod a Geforce, you simply need to use the "force OpenGL 1.5" setting.
On that note, is the "force 1.5" setting only a "Global" setting -- i.e. does it always effect everything, or can you set it to only force OpenGL 1.5 for a specific application (i.e. Avid MC3.0)?
Also, does changing the "force OpenGL 1.5" setting require rebooting the system, or can you toggle it ON when you run Avid, and then toggle it back OFF again when you want to run other apps? In other words, is this easy to turn on and off depending on whether or not you want to run Avid, or does it require extra rebooting time?
On a related note, does anyone know if Avid utilizes any of the "newer" OpenGL capabilities from OpenGL versions after 1.5? I'm wondering if using the legacy "force 1.5" mode has any effect on Avid, and if so, if it's simply a matter of slower performance in some areas, or if it might actually "break" something or limit functionality.
Thanks for all the feedback on this,
Larry
excellent! please report back on how it works on your 8800GTX!
sorry lalittle, i don't know the answers to your questions.

yep! 8800 GTX works too...

Do you remember if applying the "force OpenGL 1.5" setting required a reboot?
Pacific88 -- what happened when you applied the "force 1.5" setting in Rivatuner? Does it require a reboot, or are you able to simply toggle it on/off anytime you start/stop running Avid?
Thanks,
Wow nice, thanks to that "force OpenGL 1.5" I was able to put my card back to it's original GeForce form. One of the problems I had been having with my comp since the soft mod has been that I can't put it in hybernate mode because when I try to bring the computer back up the screen stays black.
And Larry it doesn't require a reboot.

That's good news -- thanks for the report.
I wonder if any functionality is missing or limited when using this setting. It would be interesting to hear if Avid uses any OpenGL features specific to versions after 1.5. If anyone has any information on this, please let us know.
I have the same GeForce 8400 M GS graphics card as TommyAf on my brand new laptop, and I can confirm that I didn't need to do the "Quadro mod" (i tried, but then the playback went away). Only the "Open GL 1.5" setting was sufficient.
Thanx guys!
Hi everyone,
I tried so many things that I'm a bit lost... These are my specs :- CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q6600- GPU: nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 320 Mb- OS: Windows Vista Home premium 32 bits
So, I soft-moded it into a Quatro FX4600 and downgraded OpenGL to v1.5 using RivaTuner. I can launch Avid MC 3.0 but have no video playback.I'm using nVidia forceware 169.25... Maybe it's too recent for MC 3.0 so do you know if there's a qualified version for MC 3.0 (and where I could download it)? I searched the whole Avid website, unsucessfully.
Subsidiary question: I'm using two different screens. An old 1024*768 one and an other in 1440*960. According to you, may that difference cause troubles?
Thanks a lot for your answers,Julien
[PS: I really apologize if my English doesn't sounds good, as it is not my native language ^^]

try to do this steps:
1. do not soft mode (recall back making changes in rivatuner)2. just use 1.5 option in opengl (rivatuner)3. if it not helps then change home version of vista to biz
to my mind home vista is reason of your failure
Well, if don't softmod the GPU, MediaComp just fails while loading (on the ACPL)... so I guess you're right about Vista HP.
Sometimes I just wonder about buying an OEM XP Pro......
Thanks for your help.
Here's a link to XP Pro, SP 2.
