    Pandora's Box

I have had the same thread at Liquid's forums where everyone can post his favorite freeware applications that can help others too.

Those are for PC only as I don't use a Mac.

    CCleaner.

It is a multi cleaning tool that you can have at the recycle bin and use it by right click.

It has a registry cleaner as well. Excellent for me.

You could stick it or we can just finding it by the search tool.

George, a note of caution as you make the transition over to a much more professional tool like MC....

Using Freeware apps with your editing platform can, more often than not, lead to more trouble than you want with  your system. Sticking to professional apps that have been tested to work along side MC will serve you much better in the long run than you have been used to with your consumer grade software.

Do you really want to know what's wrong...or do you just want me to fix it?

    Re: Pandora's Box

Believe me that in a very short time I will know what is good or bad for MC.

Liquid was never a consumer software but let's not start on this.

You think that some applications aren't good for MC?

How a Cleaner will affect it? I mean there are no codecs or anything.

    Re: Pandora's Box

Applications like cCleaner in the hands of inexperienced users can delete registry entries necessary for the stable running of other applications.  They should be used with the greatest of care.  Using them can open a real Pandora's box of issues.

That said, unlike BLKDOG I do use freeware.  I use MDV for media management, although even with that comparitively widely used application there is potential for disaster in the hands of inexperienced users.  I also use Blender for 3D modelling.

But the bottom line is really that commercial software gives you legal redress.  Freeware may not give you the same level of protection.

    Re: Pandora's Box

CCleaner CAN NOT delete anything needed by the OS or anything else.

It mainly finds and asks you to delete the traces of the applications already deleted.

This is the purpose of this thread. You could add Blender for example here and add 1-2 words for it,

so someone who needs it he could find it. Nothing else.

It is more than known that everyone using his PC's for editing should be very careful of what he is installing in it.

    Re: Pandora's Box

I'm sorry, George, but any application of that type can under the right circumstances.  It is quite possible to return false positives to the app deletion test.

As to the other applications - I posted no link to MDV because the last that I had no longer works.  This is also another issue with these types of tools.  If the developer loses interest the application can vanish from the internet with no notice.

If you're interested in Blender, this link will get you there.  And for those Blender users out there who haven't yet caught up, 2.46 has been released.  Well worth the download.

    Re: Pandora's Box

So we must say that the only thing we should have on the OS is the MC and that only?

Because even Windows updates can break things down.

But maybe as moderator said almost NOTHING has happened to me all of those years,

because I used ONLY non professional programs like LIQUID.

I think I know WIN XP tricks quite well in regard to NLE's.

Anyway if you could change the link with the Blender it will be helpful.

This thread is for HELPING others to find some free ware tools.

If someone has something to propose he could, otherwise leave it and will vanish in time.

    Re: Pandora's Box

CC Cleaner is pretty safe, but the trouble with freeware, is that you don't know how resistant it is to someone turning it malevolent, especially when the developer has moved on to other things. To all, there will be some Liquid users testing the waters here, trying to get a feel for MC, as there will soon be a migration path offered. For some, English is not their first language, and some statements may seem "strong", but usually the thought is quite innocent. As a bit of info to those unfamiliar to Liquid, it was designed a professional level software, quite comparable to products costing much more. I personally know many Express users that bought a copy when it aquired the Avid name, and were shocked at the performance per dollar benefit. That being said, the Liquid product has been designated EOL, and the future replacement product is a big question mark. Many Liquid users'questions may seem a bit off the wall, but they are based on years of doing things a certain way. Please be patient, and appreciate the uncharted waters (for us) we are attempting to navigate.

    Re: Pandora's Box

    (Trying to be uncontroversial)

Two apps I completely love in association with MC are:

Launchy - so much better than the start menu (I mean how many clicks does it take to get to the bl__dy Character Map!)

Autohotkey - saves me about two hours a week by giving me quick access to my template bins (graphics / music etc.).  Even lets me automate common tasks in MC.

And MDV is great - but I think the latest release is broken - however the previous releases are still on the website, and are working just fine up to, in my case, MCA Windows ver 2.7.8

    Re: Pandora's Box

    .- I use a lot of freeware.

Many of them are equvalents to commercial software, some of them are even better than their commercial counterparts.

    These are my favorites:

1.- 7-Zip (equal or better than winzip or winrar, it opens .ISO too)

2.- Open Office instead of Microsoft office. Forever and ever.

3.- "Real Alt" instead of Real Player. Yes, the "REAL" Real player is also free, but plagued with adware, annoyingware, stupidware and junkware.

4.- FastStone image viewer (Love it!! A++++, it opens even PSD, converts too)

5.- CDBurnerXP, a simple and nice CD/DVD/image burner.

    6.- Filezilla for FTP.

7.- Mozilla Firefox (Internet Explorer still exists?)

    And CCleaner too.

These are serious apps, specially Open Office.

Never a single problem with Avid MC (or any other app).

And Sverkalo is right, Liquid is (or was) not a toy.

It's a serious and capable editor, painfully and wrongly underrated.

On the other side, there are some very good apps that can be very dangerous IN THE WRONG HANDS like "HIJACK THIS".

This is a powerful (I mean it, very powerful) adware killing tool that can be a blessing or can destroy your Operating system.

    Handle with care.

Some powerful registry cleaners like "free registry cleaner Ver 2.6" can also have to be handle with extra care.

    My .02.

And this is a brief tutorial I wrote about how to use Autohotkey with Avid bins.

Agreed, but only one or two clicks needed... simply create a shortcut on the desktop to Character Map. Also (or instead), pin it to the apps list in the Start Menu.
