FLV export missing from MC QT export

I've always had Flash installed on the same machine as Media Composer.  From around MX 2004 or CS2 I've also been able to export FLV straight form my MC timeline by setting up an FLV export setting - the FLV exporter resides in QT.  This worked perfectly since 2.2.6 up to 2.7.5. We've now upgraded to 2.8.1 on all our machines and while the FLV export setting is still there, MC can no longer find the FLV exporter/codec.  I get a message "This Export Component is no longer installed, using QUICKTIME MOVIE".  I've tried reinstalling Flash and the Flash Video Exporter, but no change.

Is there any way to restore my FLV export? Has anything changed in 2.8.x that killed FLV export? I can always roll back one machine to 2.7.5 but I'd hate to do this because I'm on Unity and would like to keep running the same MC version everywhere. Not all my machines are running Sorenson Power Pack with the On2 FLV codec and MP3 either, so using Sorenson for this isn't an option on all my MC systems.

Using MC 2.8.1 and Flash CS3 (XP) Unity MediaNet 5.0.1

Did you upgrade your QT recently? That may have broken your FLV plugin.

Thanks for your reply Dom.  We did indeed upgrade QT.  Is there any way for me to fix the FLV plug?  This is really an annoying problem here.

I would first check the make of FLV plugin if there is a new version that is compatible with your version of QT. If not you will need to reinstall the old version of QT.

Thanks, I'll check that.  I case of this not working, will it be a problem rolling back one of my machines to 2.7.5 while the others are running 2.8.1?  I'm running Unity MediaNet 5.0.1

Update on this issue - I just rolled back the Avid in question to 2.7.0, installed QT 7.1.6 as prescribed by the version matrix, and guess what - FLV export is working again like a charm.

So something has definitely changed in 2.8.1 that broke FLV export.

I've only downloaded 2.8.3 this morning, haven't tried yet with that.

I've now put in a question to Avid tech support on this, hope they come back to me.  I can't keep running my macines on 2.7 forever...

Could happen, but realize that in order to provide these sorts of native exports there are royalty fees paid to the creator of the format (i.e. Adobe).  The reason the OP was able to export is because they had purchased Adobe software that installed a plugin to do so.

MC is an editing application, not an encoding application.  I'd rather have the engineers (and the costs associated with the product) focus on THAT and let other companies (like Sorenson) do the encoding.

    My two cents.

....I hear you Kevin. Your comments touch on a greater issue sometimes discussed in the threads. We don't just cut anymore. We also have to finish and deliver. A native .FLV Flash pluggin helps us greatly to deliver work we edit for our clients to the web.

You know Sorenson can deliver FLV as good as any encoder out there (with VP6 support)? You can also automate it (Watch folder, even direct to a server). It is also free with your MC. It can also output MPEG 1/2, WMV, h.264, etc. No point in making it native when every year Sorenson and other dedicated encoders can do it better, faster, more efficiently, etc, etc.

It is also free with your MC.

....Free ? Where did you ever get the idea it is free ? You cannot encode to .flv unless you purchase the VP6 pluggin Dom.

Sorry for the confusion but VP6 is optional. FLV (via Spark) is standard. If you upgrade to Pro version you get VP6.

Also, the VP6 codec is only $100USD

    Well worth it.

.....Huh ? Confused Isn't the Spark codec only capable of encoding .swf files ? I have found a freeware called "SUPER C," which gives excellent results for .FLV Flash files and uses standard mp3 audio. No $100.00 US pluggin is required. Check out the link below. The SUPER C program rocks on FLV Flash files. I've tested it quite heavily with Quicktime Reference files and it produces very clean Flash video.

In the options in Sorenson, you can choose whether it's a "linked" (default) or "embedded" movie.  Linked creates a .swf that is linked to the .flv, I'm pretty sure Embedded creates the .flv
