Sorry to add yet another compatibility question here - but I have read the Avid and am not quite sure what's going on - I have an iMac 2.0ghz intel core 2 duo with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 graphics card - am I to understand however that ONLY Nvdia cards are going to be supported in v.3.0?? I love using the iMac and would even upgrade to a newer one, but all the newer iMac version have ATI cards - does that mean I HAVE to buy a mac pro etc.?
Thanks,
Mark.
I should clarify I only want to run MC software - no hardware.
Thanks,Mark.
The best way to determine whether it will work or not is to try it. The fact that it is not supported, does not necessarily mean it won't work. It's not unlikely that certain features, like full screen playback, won't work with non-qualified graphics cards. Other than that, this document will tell you exactly which iMac model(s) is/are actually supported.
Thanks, I read that document but it doesn't even include the model I have or graphics card I have on the list - which is just qualified workstations anyway - this is for personal use, so I'm not too worried about rock-solid stability - I'm just curious if MC 3.0 even supports any ATI cards - it said under the specs Nvidia family only ... but that can't be right can it? They just loped off all ATI support? PS - I am new to MC - so please excuse my ignorance if ATI has never been supported.

I do see iMacs on there.

IIRC, on the Macs, some ATI cards were supported before. I think that these days, they prefer using NVIDIA, because they can make those work on both Macs and PCs.
I don't think too many people will be able to tell you whether 3.0 will run on your iMac, since hardly anyone has that software yet. The fact that Avid hasn't qualified it, does not mean it won't work, but it does mean that someone else will need to test it.
Looks like my MacBook Pro is on the list (2.33GHz) and it has an ATI card. So I guess it would be safe to assume that it will run just fine on at least some ATI cards.
This was something I was wondering - since the iMac is based on the laptop technology...I guess I'm just going to have to fork over my money and be a guinea pig - at least I can sell it on eBay for almost full recovery if it doesn't work. Here's hoping.
I just had a look a the Products/Professional Video/Media Composer Software - System Requirements for the new MC3 and on the Windows side it has a *Note that only Nvidia cards are supported, where as just below under Mac specs. it recommends Nvidia, but does not indicate that is the only option like windows.
Suggests to me that ATI will still be a supported card.
Steve.
hmmph...yes, strange wording indeed - it does say Nvidia family - makes you wonder. Thank god I can still get this at the student price to check compatibility! I just really hope it works because the longer and longer my projects have gotten the more and more I curse FCP.
The NVIDEA reference is for PCs.
As always, any display card supported by the Mac that meets Avid's requirements will work for the Avid software.

That is PHENOMENAL news!! Thank you BLKDOG! Sorry for any confusion I may have caused - I am brand new to the MC (I was inspired to switch after watching an Avid demonstration at my school) and as I said haven't even considered different video cards since moving from a PC to Mac five years ago (I got used to that 'everything just works mentality' apple sells). Now I'm excited and can't wait to have this software in my hands, I have the perfect project coming up to learn it with! Thanks again!
