Unable to Import.mov file with Alpha Channel

I have an quicktime file that I'm 100% sure has Alpha chanel on it. I used it recently in FCP and in Avid about 4 yrs ago.

However the clip is opaque everytime I import it into avid. I've inverted the channel in Import Settings still nothing. Am I missing a ste?

    Hi,

What version of Quicktime is on your system?  It should be 7.1.  If it is, what else can you tell us about the file?

    good luck,

Re: Unable to Import.mov file with Alpha Channel

I have 7.1.3. on my system.

It's a .mov video of black spots (like old film effect). Basically I want to make a clip black & white and put the black spots on it. The background is black but it has Alpha chanel on it.

I'm not sure what other details I can tell you about the file. It's strange cos the file has been untampered with.

Let's assume I didn't import it properly can you pls give me a 101 on how to import? thanks.

Re: Unable to Import.mov file with Alpha Channel

    Hi,

If you've tried Use Existing and Invert Existing under the Alpha Channel settings, there's not much else I can tell you except that maybe the file doesn't have an alpha channel.  You're certain it does, though, so I'm stuck.

Is it a Quicktime file?  AVI?  Something else?

    good luck,
    Carl

Re: Unable to Import.mov file with Alpha Channel

If the file doesn't have an alpha channel or the alpha is unusable, you could import it as a standard clip (ignore alpha) and apply a luminance key to it...you should be able to get acceptable results, given the nature of the material.

Re: Unable to Import.mov file with Alpha Channel

    Yeah it's a mystery.

It's a quicktime file .mov file. 22.5MB size. I just used this for a project in FCP, no problem.

I've had the file since around 2004 and have used it sparingly but it's unchanged.

I will restart my system and see what happens.
