I've gone through the entire forum here and in Avid Xpress PRO for a solution to this problem and all I hear as a workable solution is to buy a soundblaster card. While I intend to do that I cannot do it at this moment and I need to get working with Media Composer.
I have a realtek AC'97 card (I know I know) and I upgraded from Xpress PRO to Composer.
Before I have worked with this kind of soundcard through Avid xpress DV to HD to PRO without any problems with the audio EVER. So, the project I'm doing right now is backedup and I've made a master tape but I was going to do a SD-HD uprez to 720 25p and I needed composer for this. So I upgraded.
Now, I get this error for a card that always worked and I never ahd any problems with. I tried updating my soundcard drivers with no luck.
So, before you say "buy new card", let's talk about the solutions and workarounds because that is what I need at the moment.
Please help me, I'm about to smash my fist into the motherboard... stop me!

Hi,
Glans: I've gone through the entire forum here and in Avid Xpress PRO for a solution to this problem and all I hear as a workable solution is to buy a soundblaster card.
Yes, that's pretty much the answer.
Glans: So, before you say "buy new card", let's talk about the solutions and workarounds because that is what I need at the moment.
You've read all of the posts about this problem, and you know the four things you can try are:
1. Get a new sound card.2. Update your sound card drivers.3. Unplug any USB webcams or printers.4. Change your Windows Mixer settings.
If you've tried numbers 2 through 4, I don't know anything else to try except number 1. Sorry I don't have better ideas for you.
good luck,Carl
There is no such thing as a video emergency. My Demo Website
But it worked with the latest version of Xpress PRO, why doesn't it work with media composer? I've updated the drivers and I unplugged the printer... what do you mean by changing mixer settings?
I deactivated the audiocard and were able to go into Avid but without sound capabilities. Now, where lies the problem? Is it a driver makfunction or what is it? I mean, I have used this card with Xpress PRO for two years without any troubles but what is so different in Composer that this has to happen?
Glans:what do you mean by changing mixer settings?
If you right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray, you can open up your Windows Mixer settings, which allows you to change how Windows sends sound through the system, but I think this will only help if you have Realtek audio and a Soundblaster card, and you want to get Windows to use the right one.
Glans:where lies the problem? Is it a driver makfunction or what is it? I mean, I have used this card with Xpress PRO for two years without any troubles but what is so different in Composer that this has to happen?
I don't know. Since you've tried everything except getting a Soundblaster card, I think that's all that's left to try.
Well, I don't know about "good luck" because I said earlier that I'm going to buy a Soundblaster card, I just need this to work now, today and tomorrow as I'm working with a project and do not have a chance to buy hardware at the moment.
Isn't there any solutions at all? I mean it worked with Xpress PRO, why doesn't it work with Composer? It's the "same" system isn't it? What are the differences in audio handling between Xpress PRO and Composer??
If my card clearly works with Xpress PRO then there should be a way to solve this other then the four points you suggested.
As to which card to buy... people say Soundblaster Audigy 2 but I can't find in any online store in my country... Found this though, but I don't know if it's good:
CREATIVE SOUND BLASTER AUDIGY SE
I've seen one or two posts from people who solved the problem by installing an Audigy SE, so I'd give it a try.
Glans: Isn't there any solutions at all?
I've seen a huge number of posts about this problem since Realtek started being widely implemented a few years ago. The solutions I've seen posted here are the four I listed earlier in the thread.
Glans:I don't know about "good luck"....
I meant "good luck" in the karmic sense. I'm hoping you have good luck in all of your endeavors, not just with this specific issue. I realize this is frustrating, but don't shoot the messenger. I'm sorry I can't explain why your Realtek audio used to work with Xpress Pro, but it doesn't with Media Composer. I didn't build the thing; I'm just an Avid user like you.
I think you (along with every other Realtek user on Earth) have a legitimate complaint, and should make clear to Avid that they should either make their software work with Realtek audio, or provide a list of qualified audio cards. Unfortunately, I don't work for Avid and I don't get to decide what they do.
Yeah, I didn't really think you were saying Good Luck in a bad way, forgot to say thank you. I just meant that these things are far from being solved with it :)
Hmm, I can't really found a soundblaster Audigy 2 card anywhere. I'm only finding an external card and a notebook card. What is the exact name of the card recommended?
I have an X-FI Xtreme Music ASIO 2.
Will this work with MC?
On board there is always Realtek as almost anywhere.

almost anywhere.
Which makes me wonder why Avid hasn't fixed this. Is there a fix for this in MC 3.0? Have anyone heard any words from Avid themselves about this issue? I mean if you buy a laptop for on location editing it most certainly will come with a realtek onboard and sometimes it will cost alot more to change specs of computer packages, not to mentioned the risk of unsupporting issues.
I think X-FI will work... I though doesn't need the best of the best, I just need the sound to work and therefor I'm asking about the soundblaster audigy 2; whats the exact name for the card? I don't want to buy a soundblaster card and then realize that it doesn't work.
Don't have the time or money for it.
This is a really cheap card so you have nothing really to loose.
Audigy
But are you sure that the on board is to blame?
I mean everyone who works with MC and a laptop has a Soundblaster for laptop PCMCIA card?
camoscato: 3. Unplug any USB webcams or printers.

Although it was probably implied.... add to that list USB mikes! When I wasmaking some Camtasia tutorials lately I found that when using a USB mike (recommended by Camtasia) the onboard sound (usually working well with MC 2.8.2) ceased to function. The standard "couldn't find a sound card came up"

Hi Douglas,
I actually hadn't thought of USB mics, so thanks for mentioning them. I'll add them to the list the next time I type it, which will probably be some time in the next 2 days or so.

So you mean that this card will make MC work 100% (at least 100% of the sound hardware issue?) I feel like I don't want to throw money at something that I don't need.
I work at a desktop workstation, this is not a laptop, so my onboard card is a realtek that I know. But if it is to blame, I don't know, it worked fine with every Xpress PRO version I've worked with and now when I use Media Composer this *** comes up. I mean, some here say that now that Xpress is dead, people are going to write in here about their sound hardware issues instead of there, but for me I've never had a problem with it when working with Xpress PRO. So what exactly is it in Media Composer that creates this issue? It really feels like if it worked with Xpress PRO, then it sure must work with MC, right? I Mean this MC version is even a newer then the Xpress PRO version I used...

Unless Avid releases a supported audio card list*, there's no way to say with 100% certainty that one card will work or one won't. What I can tell you is that in the 3 years I've been on this forum, I've never seen anyone with the Realtek error post about getting an Audigy 2 card and having the problem continue. Everyone who has posted on here who got an Audigy 2 card has reported that the Audigy 2 card fixed their problem.
*As of this writing, the MC system requirements page says nothing about audio cards at all.
