Everytime I try to export using the Mpeg2 export command (to eventually burn to a dvd) the command fails. ('Process failed check console'). 

The console says the following:

Yep... an oldie but goodie. 

You must be on XDV 3.5, right?

The best thing you can do for yourself is to export as QTref, then encode that to MPEG-2 using a 3rd party encoder.  The issue you're having was so bad that Avid dropped the feature when they went to XpressPro (v4) and bundled 3rd party encoding software (Sorenson Squeeze) with the package.

 Actually, i'm editing on Symphony. I've tried exporting as a QT ref & encoding in cleaner, but i get error messages about not finding the original file. Very frustrating. I just need to make dvd's. Any suggestions?

If you go to http://community.avid.com/forums/t/997.aspx scroll down a few posts to one by Baklap "Everything you need to know, start here." Then down to "How to DVD?" you will find a wealth of detailed info.

For me look at encoding with TMPGenc, ProCoder express or Cinemacraft Basic for the sub $70 range. I have and use all and all do excellent jobs

Full ProCoder or Sorenson in the multiple hundred dollar range. I have both and ProCoder is IMO better than Sorenson.

DVDLab Pro suits me for DVD authoring at the $200approx mark
