    moving forwards

    hey guys

I've been working as an editor for the last 10 years, all the projects that I got were documentaries, and I feel a I need to move on, I really want to work on a fiction film but I have no experience in that and so no one will offer me a project like that and so I was thinking of working as an assistant editor on a fiction movie

any ideas where and how to apply to a job like that? any ideas on how to move on with my carer?

"Is that V3.0 I see in your specs?"

Yup ... when you work for Avid, you get all the cool toys.  When I was a Front Line Phone Support Rep in the Avid Burbank office ('95 - '99), we all had MC 8000's on our desks.  Not to mention access to all the demo gear ...Geeked

    Re: moving forwards

    Hey Harriet -

First of all, sounds like you have a good background and client base going, so I would really pause and think about leaving a job like that  to become an assistant.  Jobs are tougher to come by in this economy and there may be plenty willing to take your position and few openings out there.  Anyway, after 10 years in the business, you certainly are experienced enought to realize this, so no more preaching from me.

Is there a way you can do both?  Can you find a couple lower-budget, indie films to work on that will allow you to keep "your day job" and build a reel too?  I was in a similar situation, doing all spot work and wanted to get a couple docs under my belt.   I found a producer with a "budget challenged" documentary (aren't they all?)  and I was able to work with her on my schedule while still cutting the spots to make a  living.  The producer got what she wanted, her doc cut and finished, and I was able to get a doc on my reel and resume.  Great way to get started.

    Hope that helps.

    Re: moving forwards

You don't mention where you are located. If it was me, and knowing my area, I would volunteer to work on a few USC student films as the hours could be worked around my regular job, I could get some good experience, and most important, do some excellent networking. I would make sure that by the end of the the school year that not only did I know all the senior students, I would also know all of the faculty.

A lot of the folks tied to USC student films like the DPs, are actually working professionals. I would make sure they all knew me also.

This way I could have my cake and eat it as I would still be earning money, but building up my connections and experience at the same time.

The feature business, like most entertainment businesses, is all about who you know. The what you know is important, but never comes into play until the who you know is engaged.
