First Time "Upresing" - please help!

    Hello!

I have worked on Avid before many times, but it's been a long time since I have, and now I booked a job in which I will have to "upres," can anyone tell me what to expect? I assume I will probably be using Avid DS Nitris, right? It sounds simple enough, but I'm just doing as much research as I can. If someone could run through the process of what I will be doing, I would be extremely grateful! Thanks.

Probably not on DS.  Or at least you better hope not.  It's nothing like the Avids you're familair with.  What type of editing have you done in the past?  Film Assist, offline, online, lead editor?

What type of project is this?

The reason I ask, is Film Assists are frequently being asked to do an up-rez of the film they're working on.  Although they are talented Assists, they usually experience difficulty doing the uprez.

That's why Online Editors get the big bucks.

I've pretty much done low-budge student film editing and small freelance projects on avid xpress dv...this project is for 1/2 television show...

what are the main reasons assists experience difficulty uprezing...?? now i am nervous! i'm thinking of going out and buying a book just in case i experience problems, do you think that will help?

thanks so much for your response!

These were mostly film projects.  The better way to up-rez would be on an Avid that can do full-rez of a 24p or 23.976 project, which their Meridien systems can't do.  We offer them Symphony or Symphony Nitris, but of course, there's no budget for that.  That means they have to convert their 24fps project to 30, so they can capture 1:1 on the Meridien.  It gets messy.

Was your TV project offlined at 30i?  If so, that'll make things less complicated.  Some of the issues I've seen are just lack of attention to detail.  In addition to re-capturing at full-rez, what else do they want you to do?  Is that it, or are you Color Correcting, Legalizing, etc.

Re: First Time "Upresing" - please help!

From what I understand, it's as simple as a mere upres, which is why I figured I should be able to handle that.  I'm sure they will provide me with the proper Avid for the project, I'm doing this at a big post house

I don't know how the project was offlined, I am meeting with the lead editor when I go in tonight. He'll give me the specifics...but otherwise, it'll be straight forward, i assume...I hope!

    thanks again.

In the meeting, find out all you can about the offline, and what they expect from the online, and what system you'll be on.  Take good notes, and get back to us.  We'll do all we can to help out.

Never mind uprezing, it's amazing how many film assists I come across these days that don't know how to digitize or do simple media management.  So many movies now have the telecine house digitizing and just giving the assist the bins and media files that when they do have to digitize they are thrown for a loop

    "... don't know how to digitize ..."

Like responding, "Huh, what are "A" frames?"
