I get a crackling or popping when playing through a sequence. If I stop and restart playback, it seems to reset and sound okay. Then the crackling will return. It's like a loud distortion of whatever audio is in the timeline. This doesn't happen all the time, but it does seem to happen more often when there are multiple audio tracks simulteneously - like when there's dialogue, background audio, and music in the timeline. So basically, the further along I am in the edit, the worse it gets...

I have read through the related posts and have tried a number of the suggestions people had: we've changed the bit depth, created new user, swapped out FW cables, checked to see if Mojo and external FW drive are in fact plugged in where they're supposed to be. Does anyone have any other ideas of how to fix this problem?

System is AXP 5.8, running on a G5 with regular ol' Mojo.

Some things to check:

1.  Does all audio on the timeline have the same sample rate?  If not, convert the errant clips.

2.  Are you doing sample rate conversion on the fly?  It's in the audio settings.

3.  Got anything else plugged into the USB or Firewire ports that might affect the audio?  Firewire hubs (including using the Firewire ports on a Cinema Display), iSights, USB speakers, etc. are all forbidden.

4.  Confirm that the Mojo is plugged into a native port on the G5, preferably the one in the back.  Don't use the other built in FW800 or FW400 ports on the computer for anything.  Drives should be plugged into a Firewire PCI card.

5.  Listen to the audio out of the Mojo using headphones plugged into the front of the Mojo.  Does it sound OK?

6.  Disconnect the Mojo and play the audio through the G5 audio outs to see if the problem goes away.

7.  Make sure that your display is set to the highest resolution so the CPU doesn't have to scale the picture which could affect sync.
