is it possible to output an 8 channel .wav file out of the Symphony Nitris? if not, is there any way to export it to another program to create the 8 ch wav? we can't export broadcast .wavs yet can we?

AFAIK, we cannot output a multitrack WAV. Michael P on one of these fora suggested that BWAV export is implemented in the forthcoming 3.x release. Not sure if that includes "direct out" multitrack exports.
I think ProTools will allow you to output as a multitrack BWAV. You could do mono track-by-track exports from your Avid as well.
well aware of the mono outs...i'm gonna see if I can do it in the DS...thanks!
You should be able to export a QuickTime Reference file with 8 channels. Open the reference file in QTPro and save as a self contained QT File.Bob

Bob, how? AFAIK, the Avid needs to be in Mono or Stereo Out mode to even be able to do a QT ref export with sound (which in itself is a drag). So how do you get 8 separate tracks to a QT Ref, without summing them? I'd love to proven wrong, though....!
To export a self contained QuickTime the audio needs to be mixed down. But for a QT Reference file the option to mix down the audio can be turned off. The reference file will have 8 channels of audio. A QuickTime with 8 channels of audio can be imported into an Avid also.Bob
Thanks, did not know that. Will give this a try, might come in useful!
5.1 from Avid in a 6 track QT ref?
but can QT pro export an 8 Ch wav?
I was able to do it in DS, very easily
"Dolby 5.1” could mean any of a number of things, and the answer depends on which one you had in mind.In professional production, my guess is you're most likely referring to “Dolby-E”, which carries 5.1 plus a stereo mix on two digital audio channels. If all these rules are obeyed, Dolby-E data can be preserved through Symphony Nitris Classic and cuts only editing of audio tracks. The audio channels must remain at unity gain, with no clip effects or automation gain and the master gain slider must also be at unity. Direct out mix mode is recommended and of course, no effects can be applied. Even if running the Dolby hardware in 16 bit mode, it's still recommend to us 24-bit audio media files. The 24-bit format will allow running Dolby-E in 20-bit mode. Monitoring with an outboard Dolby-E decoder on the AES outputs is recommended to ensure that everything is correct. If all the rules are followed and since the audio is not being recompressed and linking to the original clips it should retain the Dolby encoding.
Having written all of this, I'm far from the expert on the subject and know just enough to be dangerous.

Next time I will take my tongue out of my cheek Bob. (Or at least make it more obvious.) Had just been playing with sending 6 stems in a 6 track bwf to an audio designer to see what we can get into and out of his system.
Thanks for the thoughtfull reply though.
