Need help on a resize effect

     MC 2.16

I have footage where I want to highlight one person of many, then resize that character only larger while highlighted.

My normal workflow is V1 footage, v2 duplicate footage, color effect darker v2, step in animatte (swap source) and select the character.  This selects the character perfectly.

Now I step in with resize and set the parameters but the entire frame resizes where I want only the selected character to grow larger.

Thanks to the effects gurus out there, I know this must be fairly easy but I am too new to figure it out.

    Hi,

You could do this with a BCC Make Alpha effect, which includes geometric controls for resizing whatever you've cut out with it.

    good luck,
    Carl

I have never used it before, how do you cut out the character?

    Hi,

You click on the image to make a point, and then click again to make another until you've done a connect-the-dots around the character.  When you click on the original point, that closes the shape.

I'm not in front of a machine at the moment, but you also have to change one of the drop-down choices in the Effect Editor window in order to make the effect use a custom shape rather than a square or circle.  If you click through the choices available, you'll find it in there.

    good luck,
    Carl

p.s. If you click on the little grey square at the top corner of the Effect Editor window, it'll open up the instructions for using the effect.  That might help explain it.

Re: Need help on a resize effect

BCC Make Alpha is great, but buggy I've found.

You do have to make a few selections in the tool - some aren't that obvious.  Do the following:

    -  First, layer up V1 and V2 as normal, ready to cut-out your 'shape'.  Then apply the 'BCC Make Alpha' effect to V2.

    -  Now, at the top of the Effects Editor, from the 'Alpha From Channel' drop-down menu select "Alpha".

    -  A little further down, from the 'PixelChooser' drop-down menu select "On".

    -       In the REGION tab, from the 'Shape' drop-down menu select "Custom".

    -  Now, draw your 'shape', as you would do with AniMatte.  If you accidentally draw a point you don't want, simply 'Undo' the point and it disappears.  When you want to "close" the 'shape' you have to do a little workaround (not sure if this is a bug in this version).  Turn off the Video Monitoring on the Timeline (this basically leaves your 'shape' over black); then click (and hold) the first point (you may need to make an additional point before you click on the first point).

Now, turn on your Video Monitoring again.

    -  To adjust the 'feathering', use the 'Region Blend' parameter.

    -  To 'invert' the selection, select the 'Reverse Range' button.

    -  NOW, to RESIZE, ROTATE, CROP or other adjustments to the cut-out, from the GEOMETRICS tab change the various parameters.

Do not use the 'Shape' parameter in the REGION tab, as this just scales the shape NOT the cut-out.

    -  Finally, to add 'Drop Shadow' to your cut-out, from the DROP SHADOW tab, 'enable' the option and make your adjustments.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi,

Is one of the choices "Custom"?  If so, pick that, as you're telling BCC that you want to use a custom shape that you're going to draw.  If not, what are all the choices?

    good luck,
    Carl

the choice for custom shape is under PC region, not pixel chooser, I have that covered.

the pixel chooser portion of his directions aren't there.

Re: Need help on a resize effect

    Hi,

Ah, the "PC" in "PC Region" stands for "Pixel Chooser."  As long as that's set to custom shape, you ought to be ok.  (Sorry, I'm not in front of a machine at the moment, so this is all from memory.)

    good luck,
    Carl
