How do you map YOUR keyboard ?

    Hello,

I think it would be interesting to find out how do users map their keyboards in Avid.

    Mine looks like this:

    Chris.

    It's a crazy one, I know...

    Keyboard Job

SE is my default Source/Editing Toolset. DT = deselect all tracks. PgUp and PgDn show more/less detail in the timeline.

    Keyboard Shifted Job

AC is Add Comment in the timeline (comments for EDLs)

Re: How do you map YOUR keyboard ?

    Hi Job,

I like your set-up.  I've been searching my Command Palette and my Avid menu for 'Deselect all tracks', and I can't find it anywhere.

I can find more/less detail (in the hamburger menu), but even when I've got 'Menu to button Reassignment' chosen, they won't copy over to my Page Up and Page Down keys.

Actually, when I try to change my keyboard, I keep getting an error message: 'Exception: SYS_ERROR, OSErr:- 1857'

    Probably because I'm running Leopard.

I might have to wait for MC v. 3 before doing what I want to do.

    cheers, Malcolm

I get the same error, but the keys actually do map although the icons dont change just then.

    Running Leopard also.

Wow... O.K., I'll give it a try.  That means I'd now very much like to find DT (deselect all tracks) and show more/less detail, if someone doesn't mind pointing me in the right direction.

Re: How do you map YOUR keyboard ?

thanks Kenton... there it is.  Unfortunately, even though button-to-button reassignment works (cheers, cdumitrescu), menu-to-button does not.

When I select the key I want to re-assign, the Avid menu is no longer available (it's not just invisible, it's not even available... doesn't appear when I move my cursor up there).  So I can't do anything.

cdumitrescu - - have you had any luck with menu-to-button?

In stead of mapping it just use the keyboard commands control+shift+a to deselect all tracks.

    4. on your Keyboard setting choose the key you want to change
    5. navigate to the menu item you want to assign to that key

    Done.

edit:  also, note that it's explained in the Help and Manual as well ("Mapping Menu Commands")

Don't forget to mouse click the actual key that you want to assign on the keyboard layout. Then move to the menu and choose the function you want. That should do it.

Re: How do you map YOUR keyboard ?

    Hi Kenton,

Thank you, but it just doesn't work for me!  I'd already tried (after checking Avid Media Composer Help) doing exactly that.  The problem is that, for whatever (Leopard? wrong v. of QT?) reason, after choosing the keyboard key I want reassigned (my cursor is now the reassignment icon, and everything looks good), there's no way to access my Avid menu item at the top of the screen.

At any other time (i.e., when I'm not trying to re-assign a key), the invisible Avid menu becomes visible when my cursor is nearby, but not when I'm trying to re-assign a key.  So I'm stuck!  Thanks from trying, though.  Malcolm

Re: How do you map YOUR keyboard ?

Ce mai faceti, Chris? Big Smile

    My keyboard looks like this:

Se: Select all tracks, De: Deselect all tracks, EP: Show Energy Plot, AG: Show Automation Gain, Ra: Render at position, FS: Fill Sorted

I mainly work as an assistant, so a lot of my settings are helpful for organizational tasks and the like.  I also like to assign keyboard buttons for repetitive tasks whenever possible.  For example, my Shift F1-F4 keys are currently set up so that, when pressed in series, they will unsift a bin, center pan everything in the bin, and resift it.  If my needs change I can reassign those buttons to do something else.

This doesn't even tell the full story, however, because I also have a bunch of buttons set up as macros using a program called Keyboard Maestro.  For example, I have F6 set up to color a clip red, and F7 to load the next clip in a bin.  So, if I want to check through a bunch of clips in a bin for, say, a digitizing problem, I can speed through it by hitting F7 repeatedly, and mark bad clips by hitting F6.  I also have some other ones, including opening the Adjust Pan/Volume window by hitting the * key on the numeric keypad.  I probably save myself half an hour a day with these shortcuts.

Re: How do you map YOUR keyboard ?

That's a really great idea Yale.  I like the idea of being able to sweep your fingers over the F1-F4 keys and custom sift, etc.  I'm going to see if that works for me.

Here's my keyboard.  It's taken about five years for me to finally get one that I really like.

AHA!!!  I went back to another thread, five or six pages down the list by now, and found curiosity's solution to the missing-menu-conundrum.  THank you curiosity!  It works perfectly.

I'll add it here for those who are having trouble re-mapping their keyboards from the menu:

The only workaround I discovered I needed is if you map a keyboard key to a menu it requires:

    1. Selecting the key (from Keyboard Setings) you want to map.
    2. Switch to Finder. (Command-Tab - Don't use the mouse.)
    3. Put your pointer all the way to the top of the screen (but don't click).
    4. Switch back to Media Composer. (Command-Tab)

This will make the menubar pop down so you can select the "Map to Keyboard" function. (Without this you can't get the menubar to drop while you are in the re-map mode.)
