i created a 23.97 project so that i can work with my footage that was shot 24p...exported it as quick time reference, made it into a dvd...

the problem is now as i play back the dvd (noticed it in the avid but its worse when viewing on the tv) there is some serious quality issues..when the subject in the film is moving fast i can see what seems to be scanned lines (its hard to explain) but it looks like horizontal lines.. i def. think its a frame rate issues and hoping someone knows by what i just posted or the thread what the problem is and how i could correct it..i really dont wanna give the client something that will make them pass out..

any help is appreciated

 If the more "static" scenes look okay, it may be a field order issue. Although you're working in a progressive format, the DVD still has to be interlaced to play back. A field order issue would be much more noticable on a TV than a computer monitor. NTSC is lower field first for field order, make sure the exprt settings in AVID, and what ever compressor you used, are set accordingly. I know there used to be an odd bug in DVDit (that ships with AVID) that defaults to upper field first on clips (reversing the field order on output and causing problems similar to what you are describing)

Some encoders can also handle progessive footage differently than interlaced footage.

You didn't mention your encoding software...what are you using?  Does it have the ability to encode progressive footage and keep it that way?

Instead of a QT ref, try exporting a DV stream and see if  that looks better.

the DVD authouring program i used is sony archetect...i am not sure if it is capable of changng the output scanned fields but ill check...

the problem is exactly as you mentioned...when the shot it static the picture looked beautiful but once they start moving u see the lines and once they start moving faster its nauseating..

I will try reoutputing to qt ref.. ( the reason i did this is because the file size is smaller an quicker, outputing to window media gave me a 138 gb file and while trying the dif compression methods i didnt like any of them..i did capture this 1:1. even transcoding to 2:1 or dv50 the quality wasnt 'cute' lol)

so your saying to reoutput as qtref and have scan lower field first selected? wouldnt this still give the problem seeing the project is 23.9 or just try adjusting in sony archetect?

I will also try outputing as dv stream and see if this works..

i see nothing about frame rate and scanned fields and changing it in sony archetect..

but i did see a check box callled...

so unchecked it...i have no idea if this is what im looking for but we will..

Do you have a copy of Sorenson Squeeze?  You can create the MPEG files, using the quicktime reference, in Sorenson and it allows you to choose the field order.  Then import the MPEG files into your authoring program.

 Are you using Sorenson Squeeze or another type of encoder?

i was exporting as qt ref straight from the avid and putting it straight into sony archetect..

 ok so the program that came with archetect has a program called sony vegas..

which when starting a new project allows u to pic the frame rate the scanned lines etc...

would this work...? and what is it i have to do exactly...

Ok, a few things here:

If you are seeing the problem in Avid before exporting then you have a problem with your captured source footage, and nothing on the export side is going to fix that.

If you captured your 24P footage properly, you should not see any flickering or lines when inside Avid - you should be able to advance on the timeline frame-by-frame and every frame should have no interlacing and no lines.

If you do see any problems, this may mean that you didn't capture with timecode (which makes it impossible for Avid to correctly pick out A-frames when capturing 24P), or that you had the wrong pulldown mode 2:3:2:3 vs 2:3:3:2 selected when capturing.  Or it's possible to have technical issues which prevent the pulldown cadence from being consistent.  In any case, the footage would have to be re-captured to fix this problem.

If the Quicktime reference file looks clean but the compressed DVD file has what looks like field order problems, it is most likely the fact that the software you are using to encode the mpeg2 files for your DVD is vertically squishing your footage.

Footage captured at 1:1 is 720x486 while DV resolution and files for DVDs are 720x480.

We use Sorenson squeeze, and Sorenson has an option to crop out the 6 extra lines (4 from the top, 2 from the bottom) when we compress for DVD.  If we do not crop those six lines, Sorenson squishes the 486 lines into 480 lines.  This isn't very noticable on stationary images, but once something moves the screen turns into a mess, and it looks very much like a field order problem.

I don't know Sony Archetect so I can't tell you where to look for that option, but hopefully the software docs will help you.
