Quicktime Pro 7 with Avid Express 5.8

I read the specs for Avid Express Pro 5.8 update. It said QuickTime 7.2. I wondered if Pro 7 is acceptable.

Re: Quicktime Pro 7 with Avid Express 5.8

Quicktime and Quicktime Pro are actually the same program.  The "Pro" version simply has access to some extra features that are unlocked when you install the license key.  The compatibility, therefore, will be the same regardless of whether or not you're using the Pro version of QT.

That said, I am honestly unclear about which versions of QT are compatible with the latest versions of Avid.  According to the Avid Knowledge Base "Version Matrix," QT 7.3.x works with Avid on the PC.  There were some compatibility issues with the original QT 7.4 and Avid, but I am unclear if 7.4.1 or 7.4.5 fixed these issues or not -- I've yet to read about anyone actually trying it.  Apparently the Mac version of Avid works with QT 7.4.1, but I'm not sure if this applies to the PC version as well or not.  I posted a question in the MC forum a little while back about this, but so far there has been no confirmation on whether or not the QT 7.4.5 works with the PC version of Avid or not -- i.e. I haven't seen any reports of this latest QT version working OR of if not working.

    Hi Larry,

The official word from Avid is in the ReadMe file for whatever version you have, or in the Xpress Pro Version Matrix (there's also a Media Composer Version Matrix).

So as far as the PC side goes, QT 7.3 is compatible; other versions are not compatible.  If you want to know if QT 7.4 works and you can't wait for Avid to test it, you've got to either try it out yourself, or hope some other brave soul on the forums has tried it out. Smile

    good luck,
    Carl

    Hi Larry,

The official word from Avid is in the ReadMe file for whatever version you have, or in the Xpress Pro Version Matrix (there's also a Media Composer Version Matrix).

Since Avid typically doesn't qualify new versions of QT unless they're releasing a new version of their software, it's quite often the case that Avid software is fully compatible with newer versions of QT LONG before it's "official."  This means that in many cases, QT actually CAN be upgraded without causing any problems with Avid, which can allow you to update OTHER software that actually requires the latest version of QT.

In other words, by sticking with the version of QT that's officially supported by Avid, you might not be able to update other software, which is a shame if it turns out that the newer versions of QT actually DO work fine with Avid.  Sometimes the important question is not about what is "officially" qualified, but rather simply about what works.

I still haven't seen any reports, so if this is still the case when I update my system some time in the not to distant future, I'll try it and report back.

    Larry
