TCurren:Avid needs to hire you!
Thanks for the compliment!
This really could be the time for Avid to make up some lost ground. There seems to be a fair amount of frustration at the lack of progress in FCP's development - even by some of the FCP faithful. Now that the Motion and Color euphoria has worn off, maybe FCP users will shop around a bit. Ads that really strike at the shortcomings might work. Hell, Apple did it with the "$50,000 edit suite - now just $999" ad (or whatever it was).

Introducing native thin raster support. Only on Avid
It was, "$50,000 editing system. Now 98% off." Comparing a turn-key Avid system to a box of software. Typical Apple adverstising.

With about 100K worth of gear in the picture. Heck the Aeron chair in the picture will set you back 900 bucks. Then there was the XSAN, DVCProHD deck, CRT monitor....

These ideas are great. I definitely think more "aggressive" marketting to capture new users is a good idea. I generally like the New Thinking campaign and think its fairly effective at getting people watching Avid from the side-lines to take a closer look again - ex Avid users or those who have looked at Avid before. The New Thinking may not catch people who are working with another platform and keeping their eyes in front of them though. For such users, yes, more agressive, attention grabbing advertisement - and single message per advert.
I'd also say viral marketting videos could easily be leveraged here. And they would be most suited to Avid since they will circulate with and get seen by people who are in fact interested in video production or editing.
POV shot towards an editor from the perspective of their monitor (or just above). The editor is staring at the screen, tapping their right hand nervously on the table. They look kind of stressed, very focued, obviously under time pressure. Brief CU shot a simple progress bar labelled render. Its about 48% and not changing.
Their mobile rings, they pick up, its the client. "Hello Frank..... yes.. yes I ran into an issue earlier so I lost a few hours finding a work-around.... Um, no.. not this time... There is no solution it seems so I had to cut that shot out....... Um... yeah I was only able to start the render 4 hours ago. I'm really sorry about this Frank but I might have to delay our meeting by another hour........ Yes.. yes, I'm very sorry about this, no.... yes, for sure, I'll be ready by then.. ok.. thank you... b-bye"
The editor has a second with the phone still close to their ear, with wide eyes just feeling the pressure of it all. Then they turn to look at the screen again. Watching the progress bar (return to CU of the screen). Its at 48%, it then changes to 49% and after a second it produces an error message "Unknown error: Render failed!"
caption "Seem familiar?"
Then title in "Avid, start editing."
I bet that will hit a nerve with a couple of FCP editors ;)

Nice. Neat and smart. Raises a wry smile!

AndrewAction: pedward:Its at 48%, it then changes to 49% and after a second it produces an error message "Unknown error: Render failed!"I was thinking of hiring you for my next creative. And then you go and spoil it by over estimating how far the render got in 4 hours. Not to mention that the render fail would certainly wait till it got to 99%
Hehehe.. yeah... Only crap thing would be that you'd need a time break to account for the progress which might loose the tension just built from the phone call.. I thought 49 as in you don't even get close (or half way) with the competition and to make it less predictable but yeah, the reality can be a lot more frustrating!
Cool would be to also see a couple ads that don't use editing or video as the example. I saw this IMO pretty good student submitted video ad from Novell for IT security software. Its still in the geek realm but does a good job selling something that can be pretty dry in itself, and makes you remember it

Might be off-topic, but as inspiration for the main topic.

24P from JVC and Canon covered?

You had to go and ruin it, didn't ya? I bet you're one of those people who was at the Avid demos asking; "Exactly which effects are accelerated by Adrenaline...?" :)
Yeah, lets not let a little thing called "reality" get in the way of things, marketting is all about distortion of reality, isn't it...Steve will back me up on this.
I do wonder whether MC version 3 will support this though.. just happen to have an XL-H1 which I want to use for a short film later this year.
JVC I think is covered. Canon -- not sure. The site is not 100% clear.

Now this is one of those perfect opportunities for someone from Avid to chime in with the answer proving they are listening right now...
I've asked Bob Russo to jump in here so we'll be hearing from him soon.
He tells me that he doesn't believe the Canon will be supported due to its interlaced chip design.
He's checking for us though.

The Canon HDV 24fps is not supported, only the JVC HDV 24p is supported.
With the JVC HDV camera there's support for 24p (23.976) capture via firewire and native codec support for the M2T files created using a FireStore.
For the Canon camera my suggestion is to use The Convergent Design HD-Connect SI DV Bridge.
Hope this helps.
