Randall L Rike: What are the prices for VideoRAID ST and VideoRAID SR? This is only great news if the prices are competitive. "... you lose a drive and you don't lose everything on the entire array. Sweet." Um ... this is nothing new ... just new to Avid. We were promised this feature in 1999-2000 when we bought our 1st Unity ... and we're still waiting. Unity only offers Mirroring at a 50% drive-space cost. That's why we bought 120TB's of TerraBlock. Meanwhile, it's nice to see the new storage.

Um ... for the customers that can't make Unity work for their business model this is something new.
I had no intention of turning this into a technical discussion. My point was that Avid had some new news to share and instead of putting it on the front page they buried it in the classifieds section. This is a thread about marketing isn't it?

The unbelievable aspect was the praise that was being bestowed on such a mediocre piece of information. I think you are trying to stir things unnecessarily.
Perhaps it is I that is wrong. Perhaps Avid knows its customers better than I give them credit for. The widespread praise would tend to support that notion. However, if I was investing in a new edit suite I would want to be able to compare like for like in the Avid product line and understand what the competitive advantage I get vs. the competition.
If one takes a browse of the other 3rd party board and RAID manufacturers you'll quickly find detailed information that can be digested and then compared against other manufacturers before either making an informed purchase or requesting further more specific information.
I realise Avid rely on their resellers to assist in the sale but if I were a completely new customer to Avid and my first stop was their website I might get the wrong message. I don't get a sense at all what the "extra" I am being asked to pay is getting me.
Again, I might be wrong in assuming that Avid is necessarily targeting new customers as it seems to be more in line with selling to existing customers of Avid.

The 'praise' was to Marianna and company for the direct and quick response (an Avid employee with direct contact with their customers). When is the last time an Apple employee ever posted in any Mac forum other than the ninja deletion of dissatistified thread (MBook batteries, LCD monitor, etc) ? If this was the Apple forum, it would not even reach page 5.
BTW - did you read and understand the several postings requesting more info? I guess not.
I use AJA and Blackmagic products. While AJA benefits from a good customer service, Blackmagic can't be describe as quick on the draw. Have you tried to RMA anything from them? You make it sound like there is this fantastical world of 3rd party manufacturers where all their products are great and have 24/7 tech support and flawless customer service. Avid is far from perfect but stop bringing up this generic 3rd party comparison unless you can bring specifics (and beyond Googling price).
So stop trolling. You keep touting this 'potential customer' argument when it is quite transparent you are just trolling.

I'm not trolling at all and it looks like you are flame baiting. I ask you to stop now as I am not going to rise to you. I don't think it is up to your to determine whether I am a customer or not and I don't think it is your decision whether I can air my views as a former Avid user/customer either. Just ignore my posts as I will yours.
I am not pushing 3rd party hardware as fantastical at all you are having a completely different discussion in your head. What I am saying is there is nothing to distinguish Avid apart from the competition in their literature.
I've never used Blackmagic products so don't know how they fair as customer support. I buy from a very good reseller who takes care of his customers extremely well so I have always been insulated from poor service. No different to the Avid reseller I purchased Xpress Dv then Pro from all those years ago.
I think Avid's marketing people would be a little disappointed if the New Thinking campaign didn't get former users to take another look at their offerings. Eh?
Hi all,
I'm going to lock this thread for a little while to give everyone time to remember to keep the discussion professional, and that the point of the thread is to discuss Avid's marketing of their new products. I'll unlock it later.
good luck,Carl

lmerino: I see a lot of threads about what all the new software and hardware will be able to do. And I also hear that Avid marketing is working on new materials to help explain all this to us. I am posting this thread because it is my hope (and my communication to Avid) that this new material not be just a bunch of "marketing-speak" like it currently is. .... What I'm asking is that the new material be very factual, very technical, very specific, and very much in tune with letting the customers know what we are (or are not) buying. For example, the fact the the Features page for MC-software and MojoDX have the exact same features is frustrating...

If you take away the market-speak there is nothing to really say about the hardware except the following:
1) Higher bandwidth interface to the PCI-express bus instead of limited IEEE-1394 I/O.
2) Mojo DX - simple digital I/O BOB, SD/HD-SDI, HDMI, digital audio and an unmarked 9-pin port of which no one knew the functionalitye, no CODEC or acceleration on board, no analog monitoring.
3) Nitris DX - analog and digital I/O BOB with DNxHD CODEC on-board; provides some F/X acceleration, and I/O for full-time monitoring in addition to capture and playback.
4) All the rest of the "new features" (including "additional native CODEC support") are in the software and have no dependence on the hardware for their functionality.
That is from the Avid demo suite and Avid personnel at NAB. So, you see, if you take the market-speak out of the hardware descriptions (which is really what you are asking - what do you get [beside a fancy purple logo] for the extra cost of the hardware), Avid could put the full "tech specs" for both DX units together on one 3" x 5" index card with lots of whitespace left over.
But there is a bright-side to the fact that there have been no DX hardware spec sheets or product beauty shots for MojoDX: its possible that what was shown / announced at the NAB off-sites is just a trial balloon with some changes to come before release based on the early feed back. (I know, forever the dreamer....)

wmcole:2) Mojo DX -
wmcole:provides some F/X acceleration,
Mojo DX has the thin raster hardware like the Nitris DX.
It appears to me the real clever stuff is happening in Avid's software not the hardware. The Nitris appear to just take away the DNxHD codec duty from the software giving more processor time to the NLE with the boost of a couple of extra streams however that is calculated. I might be wrong but that's all it looks like to me, the software is the clever bit.
I used to hear the refrain Avid is a hardware company so why can't this hardware company produce competitively featured, competitively priced products? Features aren't everything certainly, but value for money is.
Anyone here think that the MojoDX represents good value for money?
Anyone considering purchasing the Mojo DX?
If you had a choice of buying a 3rd party board to work with your MC such as an AJA Kona 3 or a MojoDX which would you buy? If not what attracts you to the Avid brand?
I have no plans to buy the Mojo DX, but I am certainly going to buy two of the Nirtis boxes. I saw both of them in action at NAB, and yes, while a lot of the meat is in the software, the 5 streams of unrendered realtime full raster HD closed the deal for me on the Nitris DX. I wouldn't mind having the AJA Kona 3 or something like it as an option.

MikeFilm et al....... I sent along the comments on the chart to product marketing. Now that the site has launched - hope you have had a chance to peek at the new avid.com design released today.... I expect some more detail to follow. As for photos.......... Yes they are live now. 360 degree spins of the new hardware can be found under the Take the Tour links on the Media Composer Nitris DX, Symphony Nitris DX, and the Media Composer Mojo DX overview pages. Guess I posted too soon.............
Kevin Micalizzi the web god just took a look and could see what the issue is, so is fixing them now. (Some of the Quick Tours also had issues so beware but they will be fixed asap).
SHould be fixed shortly.
Sorry for this....... moving way to fast with the redesign.
It works now!
Quick question to Avid - there is reference under Specifications about XLR outs for Mojo DX but I don't see it in pix of the box. Only the TRS.
Also, is that Serial port for Nitris DX and Mojo DX for deck control?
thanx
Holy Crap!! You are asking the questions Avid Marketing should have been asking during the development and pricing stage prior to public announcement of the DX hardware!
Hey Avid - GIVE THIS MAN A JOB!!!
