    64-Bit Support

I heard through the grapevine some of the new features in Media Composer 3. I was pleasantly surprised at some things.  However one thing I would have liked to have seen is native 64-bit support.

Apple and Adobe currently have 32-bit programs that can run on 64-bit hardware. Avid can be the first big player in the game to offer full 64-bit support.

In the mainstream, nobody can even buy a 32-bit processor anymore. Let's actually put the hardware to use!

    Thanks.

They do have full 64 bit support. It's called DS Nitris.

I suppose I should have specified - I would like to see 64 bit support on Media Composer.

And it's oh so cheap. Avid has been know to keep the good stuff for the rich places (anyone mention secondary color correction) even when it's not hardware related.

As mentioned and mention oh so many times here in the forums, it's really the time for a single product limited only by hardware. This should be a win/win situation.

What I would like to know is if MC3 SOFTWARE ONLY will run on Vista business 64bit?

Pretty much the same as far as Qualified OS goes - there is an * that indicates available June 2008.

I think the real question is will this be 32 bit software that can run on a 64 bit OS or will it be a seperate 64 bit version of MC?

    Re: 64-Bit Support

It is my understanding that this will be 32-bit software that is able to run on a 64-bit OS.

    Re: 64-Bit Support

Based on what I saw, with my own two little-cute eyes, MC 3.0 will run on Vista 64 bit - in the 64-bit environment. Opening up access beyond the 3gb limit and accessing any processor you have in your 'qualified' system.

Question, is there such a thing as '32-bit software'? I always thought the if the software can run on the 64-bit OS (although Vista gives the option to emulate 32-bit for software that is not designed to run in the 64-bit environment) it means it can use what the system allows?

    Re: 64-Bit Support

The big difference with Nitris DX is the PCI-e host exchange - throughput speeds 20 times faster than firewire, and the higher core a processor is, the faster the application runs. Plus a pipeline wide enough for multiple streams of realtime HD video, something firewire will never be able to do. Saw a demo of this at a recent Washington Avid Users Group meeting.
