When we view HDX900 or Varicam (basically same thing) footage there is a slight stutter in any tilts. I see that this is native to the footage but I am wondering if there is an AVID effect that can reduce this?
Eating is a moral act. If you eat meat from factory farms, you partake in a system of cruelty, violence and evil. Always take sides. To be passive empowers the oppressor.
Where are you seeing the stutter? After capture or playing out of deck that is connected to what kind of monitor? What Avid project type are you using?

Could very well be the camera having been tilted/panned to fast at 24p. All cameras (even film) produce a stutter kind of effect when panning to quickly in 24p. Usually there is something in the frame moving in the same direction as the tilt/pan to take the attention away from the stutter.

Hi
Well I would think film would be the most likely candidate for this since it is probably the most "progressive" or all instead of interlace etc. But I am just thinking out loud here.
It is on any monitor - low end to very high end hd. We never saw this on the little consumer 24p/30i DVX100A but we have seen it on the HDX900 -AND- on the varicam. I was told it is the footage. The pans are medium speed but not exactly fast. Its only when there is a wide static pan that you see it. I am pretty sure it is the footage. The way we watch to HD is from AVID to the deck and then the deck to the monitor. We also watch from the deck right to the monitor when we screen tape. The deck is an AJHD1400 and the monitor is the 17inch HD monitor from Panasonic.
i was just wondereding if there is a smoothing effect in avid?

That's when it happens the most... with moderate speed pans. With quick pans the motion blur of the pan/tilt usually takes care of it, and when you're panning/tilting slow enough it doesn't happen either.
Make sure you are not interlacing artifact due from incorrect capture settings. If you are using 24p (SD or HD) project settings - make sure 0:00:00:00 = A Frame and you have the right pulldown (24p vs 24pA. VAricam is only 24p. HDX900 AFAIR can do either).
Strobing feel is natural if you monitor is set to 48Hz refresh. It can also be exagerrated by small shutter opening thus reducing the motion blur.
Also, was the Varicam set to 60Hz or 59.94Hz?, because that would either get you 24 even or 23.97.
Meaning if the varicam was in 60hz and you're in a 23.97 project you may get some stutter. The 900 only has the 23.97 setting.
100% positive it is 59.94 (29.97) on both cameras and neither was 24pA. I read in a few other places about this so I think it is the 24 part of the 24p. I would guess if we shot 30p it would be smoother. I will do a test next time. I think we shot some 60p last time for some slo-mo we wanted to do so maybe I will look at that. Its very subtle when it happens. As you tilt there is just the tiniest little stutter. it does not necessarily look bad. And I am almost positive its not an avid thing... I just wondered if there is an effect that can get rid of it?
