    HV20 24P workflow - would this work?

Im aware that there is no way to work with the HV20 in a native 24p project in avid so ive been thinking about alternatives and am wondering if this might work

I will be logging over this summer about 40 hours of footage using excel in the avid format to then make an ALE to batch capture the clips.

I will create a 1080 60i HDV project, import my ALE and then batch capture my clips.  From there I will do my edits, the project will end up being around 30 minutes long.

Once I have the edit done, I will export the clips from the sequence, 1 by 1.  I will use some third party apps to go through each clip, remove canons 24f pulldown, and encode each clip into 115 DNxHD.

From there I will create a new project, 1080p 23.976, and import the DNxHD clips and rebuild my sequence.  If my thinking is correct, this might be a way to end up with a 24p edit from using the HV20.

what do you think? would this work? anything i should know that would help to make this work more smoothly?  thanks for any insight.

    Hi Highfly,

I'm with you. The avid forum community seems to be a wee bit quieter than the others I'm in (fcp, shake, after effects, nuke.) Also, I read more "just deal with it" replies:

    http://community.avid.com/forums/t/58116.asp

or "why would you want to do that?!"

(i.e.  why would you want to shoot 24p unless you have a hundred thousand dollar film out machine." (Uh web video. uh keying. uh digital projection. uh more light, etc.)

    and

unanswered threads (i.e. this thread) in here than anywhere else.

(that being said there's some good info and threads too. i.e. getting media composer to work on leopard.

    http://community.avid.com/forums/p/57080/319059.aspx#319059

    thank you renderbird and co.)

Also, why doesn't Avid support hv20 24p ingest in media composer? Now that the education package is 300 dollars there's going to be a lot of us using media composer and hv20's. The hv20 has been out for over a year now. Apple supported it last september:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306389

I guess this is why there's a "new thinking" movement at avid. Because there's something broken in the old thinking.

So Help me Help you Avid. I want to use avid software. I want all the editors I know to use it so we can work on each others projects without the mess different nle's create. But more and more folks just use Final Cut Suite, because apple listens and responds to problems a bit quicker.

anyway to answer your question Highfly here's a work around, ingest using the FCP suite (see above apple link.) Then import your ProRes files into avid MC.

yeah i thought about the FCP route to ingest and remove then export, i just want to see if i can come up with a way to do this with as few ecoding steps from one to another

i haven't tried this but maybe if you reverse telecined to the animation codec instead of the ProRes codec. you won't have to worry about generation loss, if that's why you're trying to avoid multiple encoding steps.
