I'd opt for Sorensen.
It seems that when you write "Sorensen" you mean "Squeeze", the application, whereas I was referring to the Sorensen 3 video codec. In my experience a very old codec that nearly all computers can play back, either from a QT container or an AVI container.
You should be able to use either the Avid, QT-Pro or any encoding program to encode in Sorensen Video 3 codec.
daktulus:When I open Filter in Avids QT export I dont find Sorensen,
The codec would not be located in "Filters", but under "Settings".
Talk about the blind leading the blind here - and I'm pretty blind too as I have NEVER got a lovely H264 MPG4 export to play. However most of the above is probably misleading.
Sprenson i s a compression suite that is shipped with Xpress Pro and seems to partially integrate with Avid. I have used it to burn DVD's but the fumbling, guesswork and hit and miss factor is typicall of the lack of support, dearth of instruction and lack of vision those that flog the base software have...
IDespite buying QT, have ended up using WMV for my 'preview' exports, and this works well with reliable 16:9 frame sizes and small file sizes (although very jaggedy' for most stuff). Go Windows!!!!
I suspect, like most I have spent days of trial an error on this. Grrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the above
I use wmv for previews off an FTP site and it gives a good balance between quality and bandwidth as well as being playable on most exec's laptops.
wmv or Windows Media Video for PC's, preferably wmv9 if you have it - if not you can download it from Microsoft.
This will play on any PC with a recent version of Windows Media Player and should certainly play in Powerpoint. You can play about with the quality vs playability settings to get the desired effect.
On a Mac Quicktime is best and Sorenson3 is a codec within Quicktime which you set in the settings option. You can also save quicktime files as DV codec or Avid 2:1 codec or whatever comes on your list, but Sorenson should play in most Quicktime players.
If you want compatability between both Mac and PC then probably stick to a Quicktime .mov file which should play in Windows Media Player on a PC or you can download the PC version of Quicktime player.
If you are looking for a good encoder then there is Sorenson Squeeze which may have come with your Avid or TMPGEnc 4.0 XPRESS is what I use. Very quick, very intuitive and not too expensive. http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/index.html
or Softpepper Video Converter is also pretty good and a bit cheaper: http://softpepper.com/products.html
Either way you need to export your sequences as a QT Reference file and then drop them into the encoder.
Good luck

Hi,
Sorensen is also a video codec, as Job pointed out above.

There are some good workflows on this post, if you scroll down to How to DVD.
good luck,Carl

Hi Carl - thanks for the link and sorry for ranting a bit :)
I had a bad day yesterday (including picking up a virus that has permanently corrupted my right click menus on drives - and NO I am NOT re-installing Windows to fix it!!!!), I have just exported a nice MP4 H264 from Avid for the first time - although it is a bit bigger than an WMV.
The links you gave me are uiseful - wish I'd found here before, but then I'm too busy editing or fixing things to get them to edit!!!
Cheers
Hi D,
No problem. I'm glad you're getting it worked out.
adios,Carl
no such codec
That's weird. It has been on all my machines (Macs and PCs) for over 10 years.
On second thought, I'd say that MPEG-1 is the most commonly used codec for distributing QT's for approval. It is the most common format when distributing commercials. I also use it for R&A on scenes, teasers, trailers, etc.
TMPEGEnc is a great encoder for that, but many ways lead to MPEG-1. MPEG-1 will only give you decent quality at smaller picture sizes, though.
