    Re: Through the Looking Glass

Dude, really. How many times do I have to tell  you it's 4:2:2? I just told you it can do 6 streams on my box. 4 (so far in this sequence off of just FW!) When I disconnect the Nitris, I lose around two streams of playback.

No more transcoding thin raster HD formats, RT downconvert to just about anything you want. It's a good thing and not even a part of the changes to come.

Terry is on the FCP-L because he uses FCP as often as he does Avid.

"New Thinking" is not a one time event. If you are looking for the entirety of Avid to change in 6 months, then stick with Final cut. I am highly confident  that there are more turns to be made in the coming year(s). Let's hope  they are good ones.

    NICKB:

Can the Nitris output from After Effects or Motion to a monitor via HD SDI ?

Sorry Nick, no (at least not on the Mac). That's one thing I still wish for.

    SandmanX82:

I started up on Avid just as meridians were on their way out and adrenalines were in, so I never got to experience the whole quickness thing that everyone always talks about, so I'm glad that I'll finally be able to be a part of that group!

One thing that happens every so often right now is if I press some of the different buttons too quickly, the system freezes and has to be reset.  For example, I'll press play, and before it starts playing (because obviously there's a lag), I change my mind and press the button again to stop, and then immediately press the play backwards button for example.  It seems like if I go too fast with this combination or something like it, the drives can't catch up fast enough and so it locks up the system.  I don't know if you've encountered that before, but if you have, has that been fixed with v3?

Hey Blkdog, I think my question to you got lost in all the arguing.  Just curious if you knew anything about this situation.  Thanks.

Sorry about that. I missed it.

Absolutely. I have keyboard ADD and I haven't been able to crash this thing yet that way.

Probably the same as TCurren does on the FCP-L.
Sorry, you're wrong again. I own multiples of both systems. My company is platform agnostic even though I personally prefer working on Symphony as it is still the best for what I do. You on the other hand have stated here that nothing will bring you back to Avid. So you are obviously here only to argue with Avid users. Don't you have something better to do, or are you rendering as usual on your FCP rig? :-P

PS: I give lots of grief to both companies, but I also call out the good stuff when it happens with either company.

Oh, and Pro Res HD performance doesn't come close to the new boxes. It is so sweet to have a multi-layer HD project and, when the client wants changes, they are instant. My clients have been blown away at the speed.

Maybe I missed something, but: Are you running one of the new boxes?

Are they still slated for mainstream release in June?

Have you guys seen the new "New Thinking" site? Still under construction but the "tools" button gives you a nice overview of how the DX box works with the CPU and GPU for playback acceleration.

And thankfully it seems that "new thinking" has quite a liberal NDA.

Awesome, thanks.  I seem to remember to save often only after I crash the thing!  Hopefully this will now allow me to be as lazy and forgetful as I want to be Stick out tongue

And I want to be really clear that this is a really good  thing.

I've been testing software for  Avid since '95 and I have never been allowed to discuss a product as much as Avid is allowing me to do now. They really want you to have as much info as they can give you. In advance of next month's release if there is anything I can spill, good and bad, I will.

    Sandman,

I've worked on Avids since vs 5.11 on Nubus. I've owned a Meridien system rom 2000-2007, and have often done some outdoor freelance gigs on Adrenaline 1 and 2. I switched to Symphony Nitris last year, at version 1.7.3, which in my experience was just as stable as the Meridiens (and the ABVB's before that), much more so than the versions 1 and 2 (up to 2.6) of MCA I worked on.

I'm trying to say that IMO, stability has not been an issue anymore ever since version x.7.3.

Word on the street is that the upcoming MC/SN release, 3.0, will have a better response than any version before ever had, or at least close to it (I remember an MC400 on a PPC8100 Mac with vs 5.51 that really rocked). Responsiveness of MC-Soft without any BOB's is even astonishing. I'm hpoing MC/SN 3 will get us close to that.

I'm looking forward to a demo in a few weeks.

Symphony Nitris 3.0 on 2xquad core XW8400/4(??)GB | MC 3.0 on dual core XW8400/3GB | Mojo SDI | Unity Lanshare 4.23 fibre | MC 3.0 on MacBook 2.16/2.5GB... [view my complete system specs]

Yea, it wasn't until a couple of months ago that I updated to 2.8.  I was running 2.3.x before upgrading, and most of my problems were from that.  2.8 has definitely been more stable, although not completely bulletproof.  The 3.0 response time thing should definitely be a huge improvement in addition to the stability.
