VGUK2:You speak as though these DX boxes remove then need for rendering at all.
Much, much less than FCP in ProRes. You will eventually render. But we are talking about 5 or more layers. And this is full quality. Unlike FCP's RT which with can barely squeeze 3 streams of PR HQ. And even with FCP there is a difference between Full Quality vs Rendered Quality.

I see no reason why I couldn't go directly to tape if I had a MXO but my own digital short projects are delivered as a HD file or as a DVD. So, personally, I have no need to go out to tape.
How long does it take to import, say, an animation into Avid these days? Still have to import at great length? How are file based projects imported into Avid? Instantly or a long wait?
P2 and XDCam, instant.
Personally, I much prefer Avid for XDCam. I like the proxy workflow and not having to have full res in all the time.
Terry, you wanna expand on P2?
Yes, you still have to import QT movies. If you render them out using the Avid codec, it's very fast indeed. You also get the benefit of Avid's media management when you do.
Also, still can't deliver to a network without Tape (at least the Majors).

On FCP you get instant import. Great.
And gamma shift on export.
And accidental deinterlace in "none" timelines.
And luma shift in layers with alpha and different codecs.
I can go on and on.

DShulkin:Just curious - seriously, what is it that you noticed as zippier?
I am talking about moving between Modes. Effect mode... faster, Capture...faster, even trim mode pops right up. That sort of thing. The Avid doesn't seem to "think" as long when you access menus. Much more like the Meridians.
Remember switching between SDI and component in the capture tool? Took for freakin' ever. Now, though it still takes a beat, it's much faster.

Crap. You obviously didn't know what you were doing then. Many workflow issues Avid editors have when working on FCP can be squarely put down to incompetence. There have been some already mentioned in this thread that could have been mitigated with the correct FCP workflow.
I switched from Avid so I know how different the two are.
There is nothing in the "new" Avid line that would tempt me back. The Nitris DX could do a hundred streams but that wouldn't make it anymore affordable or useful to me. I know I am not alone in that thinking.

I started up on Avid just as meridians were on their way out and adrenalines were in, so I never got to experience the whole quickness thing that everyone always talks about, so I'm glad that I'll finally be able to be a part of that group!
One thing that happens every so often right now is if I press some of the different buttons too quickly, the system freezes and has to be reset. For example, I'll press play, and before it starts playing (because obviously there's a lag), I change my mind and press the button again to stop, and then immediately press the play backwards button for example. It seems like if I go too fast with this combination or something like it, the drives can't catch up fast enough and so it locks up the system. I don't know if you've encountered that before, but if you have, has that been fixed with v3?
Blkdog:
This sounds great. We all get so use to the wait for these things to happen and when it is faster, thanks goodness. Those little things wear on all of us throughout a day. I slowly getting excited about the upgrade.
VGUK2:I switched from Avid so I know how different the two are.
Because we only own and use both we dont know???
I was always rendering when outputting to tape with the adrrenaline.
we had 8 15k scsi drives through fibre channel.
Even avid support suggested rendering all effects to avoid drop outs.
I don't care about FCP , but with Pro Res my friend was able to output
3 streams HD realtime for a CBS HD special with a very famous French singer.
Using a G5 connected to scsi drives, AJA HD box.
Can't Avid come out with a I-O box? At least offer 3 yr warranty on parts?
Mike
VGUK2:The Nitris DX could do a hundred streams but that wouldn't make it anymore affordable or useful to me.
That's cool, if working faster and more stable has no interest for you then FCP is where you should be.
So what are you doing here?
MIkeFilm: was always rendering when outputting to tape with the adrrenaline
Operative word...was.
MIkeFilm: with Pro Res my friend was able to output 3 streams HD realtime for a CBS HD special
with Pro Res my friend was able to output
3 streams HD realtime for a CBS HD special
Why is it always "My friend could do this..."?
Could be he was in dynamic RT...?
VGUK2:Crap. You obviously didn't know what you were doing then.
Well the thing is, I do know what I'm doing.
But that excuse is common for FCP fanboys when someone thinks the software is faulty.
If I render a title as an animation codec and put that on top of an uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 clip in FCP there is a luma shift on export where the animation clip ends. Is that really a workflow issue?
Because if I do the same in Avid - there's no luma shift. (Maybe it's because Avid doesn't have an iPod or iPhone product that use the same media container that needs constant updates)
Can the Nitris output from After Effects or Motion to a monitor via HD SDI ?

Probably the same as TCurren does on the FCP-L. :)
I must admit to have been taken in by the "New Thinking" initiative and came here out of curiosity. Seems it was just another stunt. It worked for a while until the penny dropped with a lot of Avid users as this thread has shown. New thinking would have shelved that MojoDX or priced it accordingly.
I Would still like to know,
How many RT streams MC Software can produce, How many RT streams MC+MojoDX can produce and if the Nitris DX can really do 6 streams.
And whether these DX boxes are 4:2:2 or 4:4:4.
