Hi there,
I know 2.8.3 isn't supported on Leopard - - and I know MC 3 will be - - but I'm wondering if I really have to go through the whole procedure of partitioning my internal drive and installing Tiger (I have a MacBook Pro, by the way, that came with Leopard installed), or another variation on this theme, just to get me by for the next two months...
The official answer is yes, I suspect, but there were so many people who were able to run the previous version of MC (2.8.2 I guess) with Leopard, I thought I'd see if things were any different now.
Is anyone using 2.8.3 with Leopard? Someone told a friend who was a NAB that all you need to do is go into full screen playback right away, and then it works fine. Or maybe you just have to "go to Library>audio>midi drivers and remove the digi-design plugs there. that will stop the coreMIDIserver from launching" (BLKDOG's advice re previous MC/Leopard attemptees).
If 2.8.3 doesn't work with Leopard, I think my plan will be to install Tiger on an external hard drive, along with my Avid folders, and then boot from this drive (by holding down the option key) when I need to edit.
Any advice would be appreciated. malcolm
Malcolm-
Followed the trials from the likes of BLKDOG and the other adventurous posters and installed 2.8.2 on my new MBP 2.5 w/4gb ram and even did the "haxie" found on one post regarding the disappearing menu. Everything happended the way the posts outlined and nothing popped out unexpected. One plus week and so far so good. I have output two short 7-min or less pieces and done some editing, capture, and import from p2 cards for some hi def media and all seems to be working fine. I haven't venutred to 2.8.3 because at this stage "if it ain't broke..." (I have also been waiting for 4+ days for Avid to send me a password so I can download 2.8.3, but that is for another post). Not really any tips, but just to say it has been done and it works so if you are dying to try it 2.8.2 seems solid and that may be the way to go. Good luck.

That's good to know Brennan, and thank you for it. I'll wait to see if anyone has had the same kind of luck with 2.8.3, only because this latest version has the ability to import the 35mbps EX-1 files, which (along with Leopard-compatibility) is something I kind of need.
Do you recall what work-arounds or tweaks you had to do, if any, to get 2.8.2 running with Leopard?
Thanks, Malcolm
Used this thread to install MC on Leopard straight from the factory 10.5.2 (so no updates for QT or OS)
http://community.avid.com/forums/t/57080.aspx
and this one for the haxie on the menu bar
http://community.avid.com/forums/t/56630.aspx
more specifically the post by Jorgen Persson:
Go to AvidMediaComposer.app in the Application folder
Right Click "Show package contents"
THEN EITHER:
Open the info.plist in Property List Editor (if you have developer tools installed)
change LSFullScreen to "No"
OR
Open info.plist in TextEdit
change the entry after
<key>LSFullScreen</key> to
<false/>
That oddly enough was it for me..
Brennan
Wow... thank you for this. BLKDOG, do you not realize that we're conspiring to use MC with Leopard, without waiting for version 3?
Malcolm
I'm running 2.8.3 under 10.5.2/QT 7.3.1 and it works just fine (apart from the already noted install issues). There are two install notes:
1) The Avid x.8.3 Installer now checks to see if you are running Leopard and terminates the install if you are. The workaround is pretty simple:
Copy the Avid Media Composer installer to your hard drive (from the .dmg)Ctrl-Click on "Avid Media Composer.mpkg" (Show Package Contents)
Then Navigate to:
Contents > Packages > "AvidSystem.pkg"
Ctr-Click > Show Package Contents, and continue to:Contents > Resources > "Installation Check"
Open "Installation Check" in TextEdit and right at the very top of the window you will see:
DO_CHECKS: { # If system version is 10.4.6 or less then, show error if (CheckVersion( $SYSTEM_VERS, "10.4.6", "ProductVersion", "<" )) { $EXIT_VALUE = ((1 << 6) | ( 1 << 5 ) | 16 ); last; } # if system version is Leopard then error if( CheckVersion( $SYSTEM_VERS, "10.5", "ProductVersion", ">=" )) { $EXIT_VALUE = ((1 << 6) | ( 1 << 5 ) | 17 ); last; }
Highlight and delete the following:
# if system version is Leopard then error if( CheckVersion( $SYSTEM_VERS, "10.5", "ProductVersion", ">=" )) { $EXIT_VALUE = ((1 << 6) | ( 1 << 5 ) | 17 ); last; }
Now save the file and run the installer.
2. There is a process conflict between "Digidesign CoreAudio.plugin" and "UserEventAgent" (Which is used to track things like Keyboard type & Bluetooth connections as well as a whole lot of data connections (network connections, hard drive negociation...etc.) If not fixed the system slows way down - to such a degree that things like window scrolls are interrupted. To fix this you need to remove:
MacintoshHD > Library > Audio > Plug-ins > HAL > Digidesign CoreAudio.plugin
2.7.7 installed fine, and ran for me. The 2.8.3 installation stops with a message that it isn't supported on Leopard, and the installation terminates.

Hi curiosity. I will follow your instructions, step by step.
Thanks so much, Malcolm
I followed your steps, curiosity. One question before I go any further: after re-launch, a Safari window came up, to a PACE web-page, asking me to download 'InterLok Mac OS X extensions installer v5.6.1'
Shall I go ahead and do this? Oh, and did you bother with the haxie to prevent the menu bar from disappearing? (http://community.avid.com/forums/t/56630.aspx)
Thanks again... Malcolm
One more question (hope you don't mind), now that I've installed MC 2.8.3 on my new MBP.
All of my Avid projects are currently in an AvidXpressPro folder on my powerbook hard drive - - Mac HD/Users/Shared/Avid (is that the normal place? I don't share these files with anybody).
I notice that, after MC installation, there's no Avid Projects folder (or Avid Attic, etc.) anywhere that I can see on my MBP...
Should I simply copy my old Avid folder from my powerbook to my MBP? Where would MC like me to put it?
Once MC starts for the first time, it should create all the attic, users and shared project folders...I moved my xpress pro users and project folders to another temp folder and after the first startup moved the contents to the newly created ones...
Thanks Brennan. I'll let MC create those folders, then I'll add what I need to.
Cheers, Malcolm
mhamilton:Oh, and did you bother with the haxie to prevent the menu bar from disappearing? (http://community.avid.com/forums/t/56630.aspx)
I did not. Once I got used to the Menu trick - it didn't slow me down much. The only workaround I discovered I needed is if you map a keyboard key to a menu it requires:
This will make the menubar pop down so you can select the "Map to Keyboard" function. (Without this you can't get the menubar to drop while you are in the re-map mode.)
"Now save the file ..."
I get an error ....
"The document "InstallationCheck" could not be saved"
If I get info on the file, it is not locked.
