    Dell Precision T7400 and v3.0

I know we still have to wait and speculation is "against the rules," but I would like to throw in a vote to at least have the Dell Precision T7400 evaluated as a supported computer for use with all the Avid MC v3.0 hardware. I have carefully reviewed the specifications of the T7400 and it would appear to be every bit the same as the HP xw8600. However, looks can be deceiving. The current Qualified workstation document has no Dell workstations included (exempting laptops). The previous one had several, including the Precision 390, 490 and 690.

This summer we will be purchasing five new workstations and upgrading to v3.0. Hence, I need to make sure the systems I order will be fully compatible and my University is under contract with Dell making it not at all easy to purchase a PC that is not a Dell. Not to mention the cost difference between our Dell contract and HP is very signifcant.

Also, I would like to know the eventual qualification of the previously qualified Dell Precision 390. You may notice from my signature that I have quite a few of these systems already in use

Re: Dell Precision T7400 and v3.0

I would like to see Dell support as well, but I also understand that Avid has a lot to do with two platforms as it is.  While Apple is cranking is the cash with iphones and focusing on one platform - their own, Avid is slammed with Leopard and Vista while having to slash their prices.

Even though I love Dell, I'd rather Avid make HP work 100% of the time than have a split focus and cause decreased stability.

I don't think the 690 ever made it to the approved list (the 670 did), but mine has been a nice system.

I too want the approbation of the Dell Precision T7400. I don't like HP workstations for Price, Design and Support. I'm from Colombia and Dell has excellent support.

    "Approbation," excellent word.

I agree on the price point. I spec'ed and quoted nearly identical systems from Apple, Dell and HP. HP came back over $3,000 higher than both Apple and Dell, who were within a couple hundred dollars of each other. I am very serious. HP quoted the xw8600 system at almost $7,000. I could very nearly get two Apple MacPro or Dell T7400 systems for the same price.

Re: Dell Precision T7400 and v3.0

I would also like to second the requests in this thread. That is having the Dell T7400 as a supported WS for MC3. At this point I am still considering to purchase MC and the fact that only one WS or two are AVID approved and are only coming from one maker namely HP is holding me off. I have to agree that also here HP are veeery expensive (out of my League) and I get better support from Dell and cost way less. On eplus point with the T7400 is that it can come with Quadro FX 3700 512Mb where most HPWX8600 come with FX3500256Mb (Stand to be corrected).

I believe that Avid should consider this with great interest as users like me who can't afford HP or are reluctant to purchase hardware from a specific manufacturer may decide not to purchase MC because of approved Hadware restrictions.

Some other comments I saw led me to believe that new approved Systems will be out after or with the launch of MC3. I would love if some can confirm this. Waiting till June won't hurt.

Re: Dell Precision T7400 and v3.0

Am I asking too much? Can one know if more Systems will be tested to qualify for MC3? I did not ask for a test on a run of the mill system. IMHO it is speced as or better than the HP WX8600.

    Appreciate some kind of illumination.

Re: Dell Precision T7400 and v3.0

The new qualifed list is out and the Dell T7400 is still not mentioned. The T5400 is, but lacks compatibility with the new DX hardware. That's fine, my review of the T5400 told me it wouldn't fully cut the cake anyway.

    So... Let's test the T7400.

A new-new qualified list is now out. But, what's this? All Dell workstations are once again removed from the qualified list. There on, there off, there on, there off. What is going on here? What do we need to buy?

Re: Dell Precision T7400 and v3.0

With the new thinking and more communication to the customers. Avid would tell the reasons why some workstations, read Dell, goes in and goes out from the list.

Before they reach the list, they must be working, and a month later they disapear without any reasons???? Is the realation between Dell and Avid so bad, that Avid takes Dells system away from the list because they do not like each other, or is it a big bug in Dells systems which make them not working with Avid?

By the way, Avid would also be more explecit about the requirements. E.g. In the comment for HP4600 Avid writes "Supports the NVIDIA Quadro FX 570 on software only systems." Does it means that on software only systems is FX570 the only choice, or does FX570 not work on DNA and DX systems? And why is there not a note about single processor Quad systems. Will it work, or not, or is they just not tested.

Maybe a list of failors would be included to the published list of success.

Dell reserve the right to change components in their build without notice.  A sudden component change is more likely to be the reason that you see Dell approved systems suddenly becoming non-approved.

Or is it a typo like the lack of native support for DCVPRO HD 720p. I have reconize that Avid is not the most carefull writer of technical documentations, there are lots of important errors in their documents.

But as long as Avid do not tells us the reason why some systems, which "would be" approved, is not approved and some which sometimes is approved and sometimes not we can only speculate about the reasons.

Re: Dell Precision T7400 and v3.0

    Bump.

So when is Dell PrecisionTM  T7400 - the movie coming to the theaters near AVÌD Media Composer and most importingly when is Dell PrecisionTM  T7400 - the movie coming to the theaters near us?

I've seen earlier those really expensive AVID-HP co-productions like the movie XW8400 and recently the sequel to that XW 8600 - but I must say I did not like them  that much. Especially the supporting acts annoys the **** out of me.

I wonder if the producers of HP have some sort of special inhouse studio deal with AVID which delays the release of the Dell PrecisionTM  T7400 - the movie.

Re: Dell Precision T7400 and v3.0

I'll add my name to the list asking for Avid to certify the Dell Precision T7400.  It is a better value than a similarly configured HP, and just to remind Dell, a lot of companies have exclusive deals with Dell for their corporate computers, so going outside the system is not easy.
