    buying a new cpu

Hi everyone, I've already read some system specs topics but I'm buying a new "used" computer and I'm in doubt if my choice will run fast with avid xpress pro 4.7.

I'm particular worried about audio board, since my Toshiba laptop has a Realtek board and can't open Avid without an external USB audio board, and I really don't want to use this method with my new computer.

Besides, I'll work with Panasonic HVX-200 P2 and Hi-def resolutions to edit short-films, and After Effects 7/CS3 and Photoshop CS3, so I don't want to buy a slow system.

In my work, I use the computer i wrote in my profile, and it works real fine.

Can you please give a comment about the computer below?

    Tks in advance,

    Guilherme

... I'd probably go for more RAM.

... just a thought, why not pick one of the "qualified" system, and get a used one of those ... or check out HP's Refurb Outlet ...

Unless I am overlooking it, I only see one hard drive.  You will want to keep your media on a separate drive or raid array depending on what speed you will need.

Xpress Pro 5.6.4 - Mojo, Tyan S2676 Motherboard, dual Xeon 3.2, 4 gig ddr2 ram, 4 300 gig Sata drives, raid 5, 3ware 9550SX Sata II controller, 500... [view my complete system specs]

    Re: buying a new cpu

sorry randal, but i live in brazil and never heard about an hp refurb outlet in here. i don't think they have one here.

and qualified systems are too expensive in brazil, so we usually mount our own system with separate parts. also, i'll look for some used systems.

    Re: buying a new cpu

Due to the demise of my approved and Avid work only dedicated HP Notebook (that has been an absolute PITA since I bought it from my frioendly re-seller - bad pool errors, corrupt databases killing projects, BSOD's and then culminating in a thermal 'dusty CPU' fault) I have just had to pop a Quadro 980 GFX card in my Shuttle AMD 3200 home built 'internet; PC to 'carry on'.  Never has Avid run better - and that on a mish mash of 1.3Gb allsorts of RAM!

Really not sure on this approved stuff and £400 GFX cards therefore!!!

To replace this great 'lifesaving'  4 yr old Shuttle, I'm now looking at

    Shuttle SP35P2 Pro - SKT775 for Intel Single/Dual/Quad Core - 2x E-SATA (£300)

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (2.4GHz 1066MHz) Socket 775 L2 8MB Cache (£150)

Anyone any system experience comments for this newbie maverick?

    D

MC 3, XP SP2, Asus P5K-E Mobo, Quad Core 2.7Ghz CPU (3.0 Ghz if I'm up against it!), 4Gb 800Mhz RAM Dual channel, 4 x 500Gb SATA Stripe O pairs, Quadro FX 1500 GFX, Soundblaster Audigy.  Approved Avid HP 8240 Notebook. Original DIY PC: Shuttle SN85, AMD 3200, 1Gig Ram, Quadro 980, on board sound, on board firewire, 2 x SATA + WD ext HDD - could that be less 'compatible? Never hiccuped once! :-)
