    Suitable Limiter for Broadcast Mix

     Hi

I am mixing shows for transmission (in PT LE) using a PPM meter (in UK) and a vectorscope as my monitoring tools. However some broadcasters specify that the peak level must not exceed certain levels. Such transients do not show up on a PPM so I would like to limit but don't want to put my mix through any old crap! Also, I would like the controls on the limiter to reflect the actual digital level so that if I set it to limit at, say, -10dB, it will limit at exactly -10dBfs.

    Any ideas?

    Many thanks

    Dave

I would throw a compressor insert on to the channel. If you have many channels and you would just like to compress the final output, go to the new track option and select master track. (Make sure it's stereo if your program is). Then, click the insert button at the left of the master track. (Looks like arrows pointing up and down.) If you can't see the inserts channel, select "View" --> "Edit Window" --> "Inserts." Once you've clicked on the insert button, navigate to "Multi-channel plugin" --> "Dynamics" --> "Compressor/Limiter Dyn 3 (stereo)" Then the compressor options will open up. To limit it to exactly -10dBfs, Turn the "Thresh" down to -10dB, and then play around with the "ratio," "knee," and "attack" until you have it sounding the way you want it. Then just bounce it out. Hope this helps!
