Dude, I feel your pain. Some folks in this thread claim it works, but I have NOT been able to make it happen. I've been transcoding my 24F (23.98) HDV files with MPEGStreamClip for over one year. I transcode to DNxHD 175 or 115, then import into my 1080p23.98 HD project. It really sucks because it's VERY time consuming and you also lose the timecode reference. I haven't tried, but I'm told you can capture the 24F into a 60i HDV project, but to me that defeats the purpose of shooting progressive 24fps. I'm actually shooting a new project starting in 3 weeks and (sadly) we're going to cut it on FCP (at least the rough cut, I'll likely finish in my Avid - if possible). I am not a fan of FCP, trust me, but I have NO choice at this moment. Of course if anyone knows the secret password to make this work in Avid please let me know.

Trust me, I have an XH A1 and have made my rounds trying to get this worked out. I have spoken to Avid frequently.
24f is supported "officially" if you capture the footage via HD-SDI (not firewire) into an 1080p/23.976 project. For this you need the Adrenaline Box with a DNxHD board or the new Mojo DX or Nitris DX.
BUT HONESTLY, I capture it as an 60i HDV project - and from what I can see it retains the 24fps footage . Now I have spoken to Avid directly and they said that they plan to support 24F "officicially" as a format you can choose from in the next year. When exactly - he couldn't tell me.
Your xh a1 friend,
Todd
Thanks for the info. I wondered about the HD-SDI. However, what about a file-based workflow? Capturing footage over Firewire or SDI is very 2006. :) I use a Firestore with my XH-A1, so sounds like I'm still up a creek for the moment. And in a 60i project it will still "look" like 24fps, but of course it's not since pulldown was added thus making it interlaced. Which is fine for some work, but not for narrative features or VFX work.
I hear you - it does suck at the moment. If you do hang on, they are planning on making it an option. I am sure they are getting an earful about it. The only problem is, when? He said at the next big release they will include 24f. Trust me, I have contemplated selling my xh a1 and getting a progressive shooter. Now, someone said you could open it at a 24p project then interlace - but, I haven't tried that.
There is ways to work around it as the earlier post stated - but, it is more time consuming.
Try to hang on bro - Avid truly is the best editing system. I have cut hours on both Premiere and Final Cut - but Avid is in its own league. And 90% of Hollywood cuts on Avid - so, if you are thinking you want to go mainstream they will expect you to know it.
I do think the more people that contact avid about 24f the better. They need to hear it.
Thanks,Todd
Thanks for the info. I guess for this project I will try the 60i setting and see how it looks. Any tips that I should know before I start it? Any workflow issues? And finally what is the best way to give Avid an earful about 24f? I am sure gonna do that!
moviemaker, you said that you are able to capture your 24f footage as 60i. I am wondering if there is some setting I am missing, when I set it up like this I get a "no signal present" error. The shuttle controls all work, just can't capture? Help please!
Lorenasa,
You should definitely be able to capture the 24f footage using 60i; even Avid confirms that.
No signal error - that is strange. Is there a connection problem?
I am able to capture SD just fine, it is only when I try and capture 24f with 60i settings that I get "no signal present" I did recently upgrade from 2.6 to 3.0, so it might be some issue like that. I just feel stuck and need to get moving on this project. Maybe I have some capture setting wrong?
Seriously, this is a unique problem because I caputre 24f all the time using the 60i format. Have you tried shooting something 60i or 30 fps then capturing 60i.
I highly doubt it has anything to do with it being 24f. Something about high def is throwing it off.
Make sure your camera settings are set to high def playback. I know if I have it set to standard and I try to play high def footage it won't work - it may not find the signal if playback is not set right.
Nevermind that last question - I see you are using the xh a1. I have the same camera. So, I know for sure you can capture 24f using 60i.
Try the playback settings. Make sure it is set to HDV playback - you are not able to play back HDV using SD playback.
The settings are in the menu function on the xh a1. I am pretty sure this is your problem.
Set the dial to vcr - go to menu - I believe it is in signal or camera set up. You will see where to change it.
We have been shooting with our Canon XL H1 HD camera since last December for our new web Tv series Please Stand By, and we are dying to shoot in 24F but we are sincerely frustrated that we cannot capture our HDV tapes in MC shot in 24F ! Avid, it is high time to enable direct capture from the Canon Professional line of cameras which shoot 24F. There are five models of Canon HDV cameras folks are shooting with in the Indie Digi-Underground Community right now and more models from Canon to come, plus our post clients are handing us HDV cassettes recorded in 24F every other week now, so how about enabling this feature in MC ?
The thing is don't peak too early in life. Currently at MC 3.0
laptopeditor,
I agree that Avid has not yet supported interlaced 24 yet. But, you CAN capture the footage. Also, if you look back in the thread you will see ways to work around this.
BUT, I AGREE!!! It is SOO frustarting - I have contacted Avid many times and expressed our frustration. They said that at the next BIG RELEASE, that they would support it.
But, you can capture it.
Peeps,
Have sent the note along to the product management folks regarding additional support. I have also asked that some of the content in the beginning of the thread be used to create a KB article.
Thanks and if you want to know progress smoving forward, zip me an email.

That would be awesome Marianna. This has been such a challenge for us. We love Avid - but, we also have equipment that costs thousands and need a compatible editing system.
