raspago: in our current setup the only way to get output through the MXO was using the same Avid "Fullscreen" option. Avid doesn't recognize the MXO any better than the Decklink.
I believe what you say, that your Avid setup doesn't work with your MXO, but for what it's worth, the Matrox people say it should work. Here's what a Matrox Customer Care rep told me in an email:
"A Matrox Apple-compatible product that will work with Avid Media Composer is the Matrox MXO :
http://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mxo/features/Since the MXO has both Presentation and Mastering modes, Avid MediaComposer can be viewed through the MXO's presentation mode"
And as odd as it sounds, I was told that Matrox is/was "an official partner with Avid and were showing the MXO running with a Media Composer at NAB"
Cheers,
Malcolm
.- That would be great news!!
And the answer to many avid users requests.
I really hope you are right.
(fingers crossed)

Well since I am incredibly cynical I'd say Matrox isn't lying outright: it does work with the Avid right now today - in Fullscreen mode - so while the MXO does what it says (you can screen a realtime SDI or component video to a client monitor) it isn't exactly the same thing as an actual broadcast feed from the timeline. I'm going to guess Avid will never allow any hardware beyond their own to have that kind of monitoring.
So the Matrox MXO does what it says it does - you just have to accept the limitations of Avid's Fullscreen mode.
posted this on the RED forum to see what people there had to say, and the AVID / Matrox NAB showing was verified.
MichaelP responded on the RED forum, and it sounds like he might get a Matrox card and test which would be awesome for the rest of us. But initially he didn't see a problem with the setup working.
if all this is true then a lot of the unhappy people regarding the MojoDX should be silenced...well, at least partially. =) I know, I know....

MXO is Mac only, so there will still be plenty of unhappy guys. (Myself, for example)
yeah....i'm windows too, but this and red area pushing me to mac.
.- Red will be supported for other applications (Mac and PC) very soon and, anyway, the MXO doesn't work with Avid.
I'm yet to get a RED job, so I'm not in a rush.
Sooner or Later, there is gonna be a suitable monitoring solution for Avid and Windows. Maybe from Matrox, Maybe from Avid itself.
Anything but FCP.
To restart this thread...
I'm just getting ready to do a RED project and only need to monitor HD (on an lcd projector and flatscreen) and output SD for DVDs.
Looking at some test RED footage in DNxHD36 on my LCD Sony flatscreen using DVI (DVI to HDMI cable) out of my lapto looks great in Fullscreen, full 'green/green' button, and very acceptable at 'green/yellow' (realtime dissolves, etc). Switching the format to NTSC for DVDs going through my mojo or adrenaline looks good. No sync issues using Mac audio with the DVI output in fullscreen. Aside from the fact that I can't color correct on the full screen monitor, what are the drawbacks in this setup? Despite the fact that I wouldn't be stimulating the economy,it would be nice to not have to buy a new piece of hardware.
Short of buying the Mojo/Nitris DX box, what am I giving up by not trying the MXO or Decklink option?
Thanks for any new thoughts on this.
What's the Decklink option?
As I understand it, the Decklink HD Extreme PCI card from Blackmagic would also work in fullscreen mode.
if anyone has got this to work without cashing in for a MojoDX please let us know!!!! we need low cost HD monitoring from Avid.

Depends on your definition of low cost monitoring. The Matrox MXO series will work in presentation mode with Avid MC, but you are paying a lot for other features that you can not take advantage of with an Avid MC.

Matrox MXO series will not work in Mastering mode with Avid MC, but will provide a "low cost HD monitoring" for component or sdi HD monitors.
Paying $1000 is not paying a lot - If Avid could cough up something that cost $2000 to just monitor I'd go for it. Read a bit about the Matrox - looks like you have to add another video card and/or use with the Avid full screen playback function. Is that correct?
Matrox MXO works on mac with Avid full screen playback. Whether you need an extra card or not depends on your particular setup.
The MXO with the Avid is essentially just a very nice scan converter. It works best with Sq pixel progressive material. It also works best if you set your video out display in the mac systems preferences to closely match the native pixel dimensions of the material you will be monitoring before you launch the Avid software:
All others native. If you normally use a dual monitor edit setup then, yes, you will need a second display adapter card for the MXO.As far as the mojo DX, Avid is a stupid stupid company. That box should be half the price and it should work well with third party software yes that means FCP AE etc. Why would anyone spend 7 grand on a box that only works with one app? They need to get a clue fast. This is not the same thing as Avid working with 3rd party hardware. That is completely different.
