    Importing DVD footage into MCA

     Greetings...

I'm working on a project where I need to get some footage from DVD and imported into Avid media composer with the highest quality possible. I'm jost wondering what's the best professional software that do this conversion, and what are the best settings I should pick based on your experience. The highest quality possible is a must for us...

    Thanks all

    Dan

Software solutions will drive you to mpeg2 / Quicktime conversion, and then ingest into your Avid. if you can get a DVD player with the best output quality (SDI) you'll do it in RT, and probablly with an acceptable quality, original mpeg footage will be your limit if you capture to 1:1.

You'll get very acceptable results even going component in (real time) from a standalone dvd player, IMHO.  The comparison quality wise between the two is near negligible, and you'll save a lot of time.

yes, SDI to componenet is close in terms of quality, I agree. In the SDI solution you avoid a digiatl /analog/ digital conversion.

Re: Importing DVD footage into MCA

The project is HD 1080:24P, into that project I need to import DVD material (normal DVD not blu-ray or HD-DVD) and I need to use the DVD material in my HD project (tking into consideration aspect ratio stuff). We are in need to import the DVD quality in the highest quality possible... I am just so new to this and would love to know how should I hook the DVD player to the MCA DNA box and if any setting need to be changed in order for the MCA to see the footage coming from my DVD...

    Thanks again

Here you're in an up rez situation. This is another topic, we frequently discussed here, I, myself, have no ideal software solution, I have made many tests, without conclusive results. I fear you will need a hardware solution to up rez propely, and go into your HD SDI input on the DNxHD board. Sorry, but I have no miraculous solution.

Re: Importing DVD footage into MCA

You won't be able to input a HD signal to your Adrenaline. You only can hook up the DVD player to your SD input; either component or SDI. But then you are in a SD project, NOT in a HD project, that's why I speak about the necessity to up rez, if you wanna treat the whole footage as HD.

Re: Importing DVD footage into MCA

     I see...

Do you think I can create SD project, import the DVD footage into it, then export the sequence of that footage from the SD project and import it into the HD project ?

Here you put the finger on the up rez question. If you convert your SD footage to HD via export import, it will look crappy. That's my concern about your question. it's easier, (IMHO with help of hardware again) to downconvert HD to SD, vs up rez SD to HD.
