i'm seeing a bunch of academic versions on eBay, etc...

2 questions???

if i buy one, can i register it if i'm not a student?

and, if i can't upgrade it ever, will i be screwed down the road?

Academic versions are intended for students only.  If you're not a student and you are using Academic software, you will be in violation of the EULA if you do work for profit.

Academic versions also do not include any 3rd party software and are not upgradable (AFAIK)

Really?  It doesn't come with 3rd party software?  I was just about to buy the academic version (I am still in school) - does this mean it doesn't come with boris effects?  Sorenson etc?  I'm just getting MC - that kind of blows - I was looking forward to playing with paint and animatte but I guess not...?

Hi,

Paint and animatte are Avid effects that are built into Media Composer, so you get them if you get the academic version.  You don't get Boris and Sorensen and whatever other third party software that comes with the full version.

I actually just got the academic version a couple weeks ago and Kenton is right...no 3rd party software.  However, I just downloaded a 30-day trial of Boris, and it works great.  If you're on a budget, I really recommend going this route.

Thanks!  I'm actually not bummed anymore - I thought all the effects in Avid were boris plugins - didn't realize the ones I actually wanted were standard.  I already own Sorenson, so that's not a problem, and I do really, really straight narrative stuff so I don't know how much mileage those boris effects would get me anyway.  Now if 3.0 would come out so I can buy it (stuck in Leopard Limbo!)
